New Zealand had their chances against England last time out, and I really did think they were going to get the win in that clash. At one point, the WIN VIZ was giving them a 87% chance to win, and they stuffed it. Now, they play South Africa, whom they have already lost to in this tournament. Can they right their wrongs?

In some good news, Matt Henry is set to return after taking some time off following the birth of his child. They will need all the help they can get against the South African batters. If the Kiwis can win the toss, they’ll bat second, and they are in with a shot of taking this game out.

In their clash with South Africa earlier in the tournament, the Black Caps only managed 175 runs. So, they will need the likes of the opening pair of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert to stand up and get them off to a flying start. Eden Garden usually boasts high totals, so the batters really need to fire all down the lineup.

South Africa

South Africa is certainly the deserved favourite. They have won every single game of the tournament so far, including in their final game of the Super 8’s when they rested some key players after already qualifying for the Semi-Finals. Their 76-run win against India in the Super 8’s has been the game to silence the doubters.

Aiden Markram looks to be the batter to watch for South Africa, as he is having an excellent performance so far this tournament. He is currently third-highest scoring batsman in the tournament with 268 runs. For the bowlers, it’s Lungi Ngidi leading the way for South Africa, sitting in equal-third spot in the tournament with 13 wickets.

I think batting is where South Africa excel the most, and their top three will be hard to contain. With the chasers' bias at this ground, if South Africa are batting second, their chances only rise. If South Africa bat first, I still think South Africa are the team to beat. They have shown their class and skill time and time again throughout this tournament.

In T20s, New Zealand have the slight edge over South Africa in recent clashes, winning three of their last five matches. Looking over a longer period, though, it is South Africa that has the upper hand. They have won 11 of the last 19 encounters with New Zealand.

New Zealand and South Africa were both in Group D, and South Africa won their clash by seven wickets over New Zealand in the Group Stage. Last time out, New Zealand lost to England with just three balls left, and South Africa had no trouble getting past Zimbabwe, winning by five wickets.

The most vital trends that you should be aware of leading into this match: 

• New Zealand don’t have any bowlers in the top 15 wicket-takers of the tournament.
• Eight of the last 11 international T20 night matches at Eden Gardens have been won by the chasing team.
• Rachin Ravindra is in hot form with the ball, taking 4-27 and 3-19 in his last two games.

All the signs point towards South Africa, and I have to go with what I’m seeing here. However, this is knockout cricket, and this type of cricket tends to bring a few surprises. South Africa is still decent enough value in the head-to-head market, if you’re so inclined. 

With the way South Africa have been so dominant throughout this tournament (seven wins from seven games), it’s hard to go past them, even in the unpredictability of knockout cricket. While I think New Zealand will challenge them, the depth (and confidence) of South Africa should see them across the line here.

With a spot in the Final of the T20 World Cup up for grabs, tension will be at an all-time high. Knockout cricket does tend to spring unusual results, but it is difficult to go past South Africa, who are a well-oiled machine right now.
