New Zealand

New Zealand didn’t get to take the field for their first Super 8’s game due to rain. This game will be played at the same ground where they were due to play against Pakistan. Due to the washout, they still haven’t played at this ground, which is a slight disadvantage.

However, as I mentioned in my New Zealand vs Pakistan preview, New Zealand’s bowling attack should thrive on this Colombo pitch. The Black Caps have had a solid campaign to date, with their only loss coming against the impressive South African team.

Batters like Tim Seifert (who has scored 173 runs in four innings) will be itching to go. Meanwhile, I think Mitchell Santner is due for a standout performance with the ball. New Zealand looks to be a well-rounded team, and they are fully rested to boot.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka got their behinds handed to them in their first Super 8’s clash against England (and that’s putting it nicely). They lost that clash by over 50 runs, and they didn’t even crack the 100-run mark in their batting innings. Their points differential has taken a beating as well; they need to win this to stay in the hunt.

The Sri Lankans also lost to Zimbabwe in the Group Stage. While Zimbabwe are a decent team (they also beat Australia after all), they recently lost by over 100 runs to the West Indies. So, that kind of puts the form in perspective. 

Pathum Nissanka looks to be the standout batter for Sri Lanka, scoring over 200 runs across five innings so far. If he can get going, New Zealand could be in trouble. Kusal Perera also has a good record at R Premadasa Stadium in T20Is, scoring 464 runs.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka have played each other in 28 T20Is, and New Zealand has won 16 of them, including three of the last four. However, Sri Lanka did get the better of New Zealand in their last clash, winning by seven runs (and Kusal Perera scored 101 runs).

Yes, the crowd will be against them, and they haven’t played on this pitch. However, they have had more stable results over the course of the entire tournament, and look much more well-rounded (and reliable). Sri Lanka’s batters can go bang, but I think New Zealand’s bowling is more than equipped to neutralise them. Take New Zealand to win.
