New Zealand vs Sri Lanka - Cricket Betting Tips

With England already confirmed for the Semi Finals in Group 2, New Zealand can take a huge step towards joining England with a win in this game.

News Highlights

  • New Zealand’s first Super 8’s clash was washed out.
  • Sri Lanka lost by 51 runs to England in their first Super 8’s match.
  • This game is at R Premadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka, where New Zealand are yet to play.

Both New Zealand and Sri Lanka come into this clash needing a win. New Zealand can still make the Semi Finals with a loss here, but it becomes a much more difficult task. For Sri Lanka, a loss here sees them out of the World Cup. We review all the key stats and data when putting together our cricket betting tips, so make sure you check out our preview before the game starts!

Team Form, Key Players & Tactics

New Zealand

New Zealand didn’t get to take the field for their first Super 8’s game due to rain. This game will be played at the same ground where they were due to play against Pakistan. Due to the washout, they still haven’t played at this ground, which is a slight disadvantage.

However, as I mentioned in my New Zealand vs Pakistan preview, New Zealand’s bowling attack should thrive on this Colombo pitch. The Black Caps have had a solid campaign to date, with their only loss coming against the impressive South African team.

Batters like Tim Seifert (who has scored 173 runs in four innings) will be itching to go. Meanwhile, I think Mitchell Santner is due for a standout performance with the ball. New Zealand looks to be a well-rounded team, and they are fully rested to boot.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka got their behinds handed to them in their first Super 8’s clash against England (and that’s putting it nicely). They lost that clash by over 50 runs, and they didn’t even crack the 100-run mark in their batting innings. Their points differential has taken a beating as well; they need to win this to stay in the hunt.

The Sri Lankans also lost to Zimbabwe in the Group Stage. While Zimbabwe are a decent team (they also beat Australia after all), they recently lost by over 100 runs to the West Indies. So, that kind of puts the form in perspective.

Pathum Nissanka looks to be the standout batter for Sri Lanka, scoring over 200 runs across five innings so far. If he can get going, New Zealand could be in trouble. Kusal Perera also has a good record at R Premadasa Stadium in T20Is, scoring 464 runs.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Key Stats

New Zealand and Sri Lanka have played each other in 28 T20Is, and New Zealand has won 16 of them, including three of the last four. However, Sri Lanka did get the better of New Zealand in their last clash, winning by seven runs (and Kusal Perera scored 101 runs).

The most vital trends that you should be aware of leading into this match:

  • Two of the top-five highest scoring batters in the World Cup are Sri Lankan (Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera).
  • Runs have been hard to come by at R Premadasa Stadium, especially in the Zimbabwe-Australia and India-Pakistan matches.
  • New Zealand are well-rested but underprepared and have yet to play at this stadium.

Our Cricket Betting Predictions

No doubt the Sri Lankans will be out in force to cheer on their home team. It’s difficult to accurately judge the most recent performances of each team against each other, as New Zealand’s game was washed out. However, based on the way Sri Lanka played in their last clash, I would say New Zealand have a better chance here.

Yes, the crowd will be against them, and they haven’t played on this pitch. However, they have had more stable results over the course of the entire tournament, and look much more well-rounded (and reliable). Sri Lanka’s batters can go bang, but I think New Zealand’s bowling is more than equipped to neutralise them. Take New Zealand to win.

Final Words

A lot seems to be riding on this game, especially for Sri Lanka. The atmosphere alone should be reason enough to get up super early to watch this clash. There are a couple of unknowns coming into this game for New Zealand, but they are an experienced team that is capable of stepping up to the plate.
