Denmark
Touted by many football betting tips specialists as favourites in Group C, Denmark—the 1992 European champions—did little to justify the hype in their first qualifier. A lifeless draw against Scotland prompted many to question their credentials.
They more than made up for it in Greece, though, with a clinical 3-0 victory that restored their reputation and made them serious candidates for the top of the table.
Ranked 20th in FIFA’s world standings, Denmark sit first in Group C on goal difference (before their Belarus clash) and have established themselves as World Cup regulars. They’ve also featured in five of the last seven tournaments, including Russia and Qatar.
Team News: Christian Eriksen, who had been left out of the squad in September, has earned a recall for Denmark’s October qualifiers following strong performances for Wolfsburg.
Predicted Lineup: Schmeichel; Gaaei, Andersen, Christiansen, Maehle; Hojbjerg, Hjulmand, Eriksen; Isaksen, Hojlund, Damsgaard.
Greece
The Sky Blues and White had been flying before their home match against Denmark. They won four in a row and scored 17 goals, including a thumping 5-1 win over Belarus in their opener. But the Danes quickly reminded them why top spots don’t come easy.
Now, Greece will aim to right the wrongs on Monday, with much riding on their star striker Vangelis Pavlidis.
The Benfica forward has been in sharp form in Portugal, netting five times in his opening eight league games. Greece will need him to continue that form if they are to claim a result.
Team News: Panagiotis Retsos is not available for selection as he nurses a groin injury.
Predicted Lineup: Tzolakis; Vagiannidis, Mavropanos, Koulierakis, Tsimikas; Zafeiris, Kourbelis; Karetsas, Bakasetas, Tzolis; Pavlidis.
