International Friendly: Ecuador vs New Zealand

Having secured their places at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ecuador and New Zealand continue their preparations for next summer’s big event with a friendly battle on American soil this Wednesday.

The All Whites will make their first World Cup appearance in 16 years after winning the Oceanian qualifiers. Ecuador, meanwhile, will head into their fifth World Cup campaign, thanks to a second place qualifier finish in the CONMEBOL region.

Read on for our betting picks for this friendly encounter, based on odds from the best betting sites in NZ. We have also spiced things up with a sweet bet on the match outcome over at Sportaza.

Ecuador vs New Zealand Analysis

Ecuador

Football betting sites did not foresee Ecuador finishing ahead of regional heavyweights like Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers. But they defied expectations by finishing second in a region that has a combined World Cup tally of eight titles.

Only current world champions Argentina finished ahead of them. But even La Albiceleste lost more games (four) than Ecuador (two).

Sebastian Beccacece’s men extended their winless run to 14 matches when they held Canada to a goalless draw on Saturday.

Team News: Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie is set to make his 50th appearance for La Tricolor in this match.

Predicted Lineup: Galindez; Franco, Ordonez, Pacho, Ramirez; Alcivar, Vite; Mercado, Caicedo, Paez; Valencia.

New Zealand

New Zealand were utterly dominant throughout their qualification campaign in the Oceania region. They won all six of the matches they played, scored 36 goals and conceded only once. But they have failed to show that level of performance against teams outside the region.

New Zealand have played seven friendlies against non-Oceania opponents since beating New Caledonia in the qualifiers. Other than a win against Ivory Coast and a draw with Norway, they lost the other five, most recently falling to Colombia on Sunday.

Sports betting apps, therefore, are not considering Darren Bazeley’s team the favourites against Ecuador. But a spirited display against Copa America finalists Colombia should give them some self-belief heading into this match.

Team News: The ever-reliable Chris Wood will be missing from the New Zealand line-up once again as he is still recovering from a knee injury.

Predicted Lineup: Crocombe; De Vries, Boxall, Surman, Tuiloma; Bell, Stamenic; Garbett, Singh, Just; Barbarouses.

Ecuador vs New Zealand Stats and Trends

  • Ecuador have lost only once since Beccacece took over Ecuador.
  • Ecuador and New Zealand have never met before in a senior level international match.
  • New Zealand have never won against a South American opposition in senior men’s football.

Ecuador vs New Zealand Prediction

New Zealand did not lose a single match the last time they had featured in the World Cup. But a run of three draws in three group matches were not enough for the All Whites to get knockout stage entry.

With an expanded 48-team format in 2026, Bazeley might believe New Zealand can better their 2010 campaign next year. But results from their warm-up matches have not been convincing so far.

Ecuador, on the other hand, have been quite impressive lately. They have been quite difficult to beat under Beccacece and ended their World Cup qualifier campaign with an incredible feat - a 1-0 win over Argentina.

They did not win any of the three friendlies they have played since then, however. After draws against USA, Mexico, Canada, Ecuador will look to return to winning ways against New Zealand.

Given New Zealand’s struggles outside their region, Ecuador should be able to win this match. Neither team has been involved in high-scoring affairs recently, so we're expecting a tight, low-scoring contest.

Ecuador vs New Zealand - The Ultimate Bet

Ecuador 1-0 New Zealand @ $5.00

Ecuador conceded only five goals during their 18-match World Cup qualification run. Without the experience of Wood, it seems unlikely that New Zealand will be able to break down such a resilient defence. That said, we don’t expect Ecuador to score a lot of goals either. They have scored multiple times only once this year. This has all the makings of a narrow 1-0 win for Ecuador, which pays well at Sportaza.
