West Brom vs Blackburn Rovers

Sunday August 10, 2:00am NZT, The Hawthorns

After cutting ties with Tony Mowbray near the close of last season, West Brom turned to ex-Spurs man Ryan Mason to lead the charge. The Baggies have kept a low profile in the transfer market, but playoff ambitions remain alive and well at The Hawthorns.

They’ll now take on a Blackburn Rovers outfit that turned their season around with an inspired run of form after a chaotic spell in March. Manager Valerien Ismael has since had a full pre-season to drill his high-intensity approach into the squad ahead of the new term.

It could take time for Mason’s footballing philosophy to bed in at West Brom, while Ismael’s structured, counter-attacking tactics suggest this one might be tight and lacking in goals. Odds on betting apps for under 2.5 goals are quite short, but we feel it’s a safe call.

Stoke City vs Derby County

Sunday August 10, 2:00am NZT, Bet365 Stadium

For a club of Stoke City’s stature, scraping to safety on the last day of the campaign was a tough pill to swallow. Mark Robins became the third manager to take charge of the Potters last season, and after avoiding the drop, the former Coventry boss will look to work up the standings this time around.

It was a tough season for Derby too, and without John Eustace’s late intervention, relegation would likely have been the outcome. After impressing at yet another club, Eustace is expected to lead the Rams into a stronger campaign.

With little to separate these two sides on paper, this one could go down to the wire — but Stoke’s home support should just tip the balance in their favour.

Sheffield United vs Bristol City

Sunday August 10, 4:30am NZT, Bramall Lane

Sheffield United cruised past Bristol City with a dominant 6-0 aggregate win in last season’s play-off semi-finals, only to fall short in the final with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Sunderland under the Wembley arch.

It’s been a summer of change for both clubs. Sheffield United have moved on from Chris Wilder, bringing in former Reading boss Rubén Sellés to lead their promotion charge.

Bristol City, meanwhile, saw Liam Manning depart for Norwich and have turned to ex-Barnsley manager Gerhard Struber. The Blades will have eyes on automatic promotion, while the Robins are once again targeting a top-six finish.

Football betting sites have the hosts as favourites, and rightly so.
