An ambitious French team squares off against record champions Germany in a blockbuster UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarter-final on Sunday at St. Jakob-Park.

France

France boss Laurent Bonadei made some big calls ahead of the tournament as he left out captain Wendie Renard and all-time top scorer Eugenie Le Sommer from the squad. Bonadei wanted to introduce a fresh dynamic into the team, and after the group stage, it seems he’s succeeded.

France have made great progress under the former PSG U19 manager, but their lack of success in major tournaments has led betting apps to label them as dark horses in international competitions. This time, however, the 2022 semifinalists have made it clear they mean business with a dominant group stage display.

Team News: Sandie Toletti and Pauline Payraud-Magnin missed training because of injuries. They will face late fitness tests, but as things stand, the duo will watch on from the sidelines on Sunday.

DFB-Frauen ground out lacklustre wins against Denmark and Poland before getting blown away by Sweden. Giulia Gwinn’s absence has dealt a major blow to Germany’s campaign.The German captain is a crucial part of the team’s backline and also the loudest voice in the dressing room. 

Without their talismanic captain, Germany don’t look like a cohesive unit. Unless they solve their leadership issues and defensive frailties, it could be a long night in Basel for the European giants.

Team News: Gwinn’s replacement Carlotta Wamser picked up a red against Sweden, putting Wuck in a tough spot ahead of the France match.
