Mexico vs Australia Prediction

Mexico and Australia meet at the iconic Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday afternoon New Zealand time in a pre-World Cup friendly, with both sides fine-tuning their preparations less than two weeks before the tournament kicks off.

This is Mexico’s penultimate warm-up before they open the 2026 World Cup against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca on June 11. Australia, drawn in Group D alongside the USA, Turkey and Paraguay, will use this as their final friendly before heading north to Vancouver.

In this Mexico vs Australia preview, I look at the context around both camps and where the value lies. I’ve got a goals angle paying over $3.50 for those scanning the football betting markets this week.

Mexico vs Australia Analysis

Mexico

Mexico are six unbeaten and look in decent nick heading into a home World Cup.

Their 2-0 win over Ghana in Puebla last week was efficient if unspectacular - Brian Gutierrez scored inside two minutes and Guillermo Martinez added a second on the counter in the 54th. Before that, 0-0 with Portugal and 1-1 with Belgium in March were decent results against strong European opposition, and their 4-0 thumping of Iceland in February was comfortable.

Javier Aguirre has a near-full squad to pick from, and I expect he’ll rotate here. This is about getting minutes into legs, not about the result. Raul Jimenez is likely to start given he’s the established number nine, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Guillermo Martinez or German Berterame given a run too.

Mexico’s strength is their midfield depth. Edson Alvarez, Alvaro Fidalgo, Luis Romo and Orbelin Pineda all offer different profiles, and Aguirre will want to test different combinations before the opener.

Team News: Montes is a doubt with a muscle complaint and may be rested as a precaution. Araujo is done for the season.

Predicted Lineup: Rangel; Sanchez, Vasquez, Reyes, Gallardo; Alvarez, Romo; Gutierrez, Fidalgo, Vega; Jimenez.

Australia

I’m cautious about reading too much into Australia’s March results.

Yes, they beat Cameroon 1-0 and thrashed Curacao 5-1, but the quality of opposition wasn’t high. Before that, they lost three on the trot - 0-3 to Colombia, 0-1 to Venezuela, 1-2 to the USA - and looked short of creativity against teams that pressed them.

Tony Popovic doesn’t care about style. His Socceroos will be compact, hard to break down, happy to concede possession. This has worked in qualifying and it could frustrate Mexico here.

Nestory Irankunda is the player to watch - the 20-year-old scored twice off the bench against Curacao. He’s got real pace that could trouble any defence when cutting inside from the right.

Riley McGree has been ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury, which is a blow to their midfield creativity. Aiden O’Neill is also out until mid-June, and Patrick Yazbek is nursing a knock. That’s three midfield options gone or limited.

Team News: McGree is out of the World Cup entirely. O’Neill is sidelined until mid-June. Yazbek is a doubt. Karacic lacks fitness.

Predicted Lineup: Ryan; Geria, Circati, Burgess, Bos; Metcalfe, Robertson; Irankunda, Hrustic, Mabil; Boyle.

Mexico vs Australia Stats and Trends

  • These two last met in September 2023, a 2-2 draw in Dallas where Australia squandered a two-goal lead.
  • Mexico are unbeaten in their last six internationals, winning four.
  • Australia have lost three of their last seven, all against top-25 opponents.
  • Mexico have scored in five of their last six internationals, failing only in the 0-0 with Portugal.
  • Australia have conceded at least twice in two of their three defeats since October 2025.

Mexico vs Australia Prediction

I’m tipping Mexico here in a tight one. Popovic’s side will be organised and won’t give Aguirre’s team easy chances, and I saw enough in the March fixtures to think the Socceroos can frustrate for a while.

But Mexico have more quality across the park, and playing in front of what will be a packed, pro-Mexican Rose Bowl gives them an edge. Friendly or not, this is their send-off to the World Cup on US soil. They’ll want to put on a performance. A 2-1 win feels about right - Mexico controlling it without ever fully putting Australia away.

For those checking free sports bet promotions ahead of the World Cup, this match is a good entry point into the international markets.

Mexico vs Australia - The Ultimate Bet

Over 2.5 Goals and Mexico to Win @ $3.60

Mexico need to score, and they will. Aguirre won’t be interested in a cagey 1-0.

This is about rhythm and combinations - and about sending a message before the tournament. Australia’s midfield is weakened without McGree and O’Neill, and their record against stronger opposition in the November window was poor.

I can see Mexico going two up before Australia nick one on the break through Irankunda or Mabil. Mexico have scored two or more in three of their last six, and both of Australia’s defeats where they faced top-20 opposition (Colombia 3-0, USA 2-1) produced at least three goals between the sides.

At $3.60, I’m happy to back it on the NZ betting sites available for this match.
