Mexico vs South Africa Prediction: World Cup Betting Tips & Odds

Mexico and South Africa meet at the Estadio Azteca on Friday morning New Zealand time in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, a repeat of the fixture that kicked off the 2010 tournament in Johannesburg.

That game finished 1-1, but I don’t expect this one to follow the same script. Mexico are at home, unbeaten in 2026, and a sold-out Azteca will be cheering them on.

In this Mexico vs South Africa preview, I look at both teams’ form heading into the tournament and offer up my picks for anyone keen to bet on football this week.

Mexico

Mexico are unbeaten in all eight of their matches this year, winning six. Their preparation for a home World Cup could hardly have gone better, with wins over Ghana, Australia, and Serbia across their last three friendlies, scoring eight goals and conceding just once.

Drawing 0-0 with Portugal and 1-1 with Belgium were their only blemishes, and I’d argue both results look stronger with hindsight. Neither European side could break them down.

Raul Jimenez will lead their line. Julian Quinones is the one I’m watching, though. He finished as Golden Boot winner in the Saudi Pro League with 33 goals in 31 games for Al-Qadsiah. He’ll play out wide for Mexico, but he’s a different proposition to anything South Africa will have faced in their warm-ups.

Guillermo Ochoa would join Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as a six-time World Cup player if selected, but Raul Rangel has been first choice all year and I’d be surprised if Aguirre changes that now.

Team News: No fresh injury concerns. Mora, 17, could feature from the bench as the youngest player at the tournament.

Predicted Lineup: Rangel; Sanchez, Vasquez, Montes, Gallardo; Lira; Alvarado, Fidalgo, Quinones; Gutierrez; Jimenez.

South Africa

It’s been 16 years since Bafana Bafana last played at a World Cup, and their warm-up form has been poor. A 0-0 draw with Nicaragua, a 1-1 draw with Jamaica in a closed-door friendly in Pachuca, and two results against Panama in March - drawing 1-1 and losing 2-1. 

Hugo Broos told reporters after their Jamaica game that his side needed to do “much more” before facing Mexico.

Going forward, they look toothless. Lyle Foster is their main striker and he managed just three Premier League goals all season as Burnley went down. 

Ronwen Williams is their captain and best player. He was excellent during qualifying and at the Africa Cup of Nations, where South Africa went out in the round of 16 to Cameroon. If they’re to get anything at the Azteca, Williams will need to be at his absolute best.

Team News: Modiba returned to full training this week after a hamstring injury and is available. No other fitness concerns.

Predicted Lineup: Williams; Mudau, Okon, Mbokazi, Modiba; Mokoena, Mbatha; Appollis, Maseko, Mofokeng; Foster.

• South Africa have never progressed beyond the group stage in three previous World Cup appearances.
• Mexico have conceded just one goal across their last five friendlies.
• Only three of the last 15 World Cup opening matches have produced more than two goals.
• Mexico have won three consecutive home matches in 2026 by a combined score of 11-1.

I’m backing Mexico here. South Africa might frustrate them for a while - maybe half an hour, maybe longer - but there’s too big a gap in quality for this to go any other way.

World Cup openers tend to be tight, cautious affairs. I can see Mexico winning by a goal or two, with South Africa struggling to create anything going forward. Foster’s form is a problem for Broos, and altitude at the Azteca won’t help a side that only arrived in Mexico last week.

Mexico Win to Nil @ $2.50

Mexico’s defensive record in 2026 has been excellent. Six clean sheets from their last eight games, and Rangel has barely been tested across the final three friendlies.

South Africa’s attack is blunt. Foster scored three goals all season in the Premier League, and their warm-up friendlies produced just three goals across four games. Broos’ side will defend deep and try to limit damage rather than commit bodies forward. That approach gives Mexico the clean sheet I’m looking for.
