UEFA Champions League: Newcastle vs Barcelona
The Champions League heads to St. James’ Park on Wednesday morning New Zealand time as Newcastle take on Barcelona in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie. Spoiler alert: this one has goals written all over it.
Barcelona are La Liga leaders and one of Europe’s most ruthless attacking sides. Newcastle sit 12th in the Premier League but have been brilliant in the UCL, topping the competition’s scoring charts with 26 goals. Something has to give here - or does it?
I breakdown this match in my Newcastle vs Barcelona preview, from form and team news to a $2.75 play on the goals market that I reckon is mighty generous considering what we know about these sides.
Newcastle vs Barcelona Analysis
Newcastle
Newcastle’s Premier League form is rough - 12 losses from 29 league games - but they’ve somehow thrived in European football.
They’ve racked up four home wins from four since their opening loss to Barcelona, with three of those seeing clean sheets. They obliterated Qarabag 9-3 on aggregate in the playoffs as Anthony Gordon rammed home his stance as the competition’s joint-top English scorer ever in a single season.
I do have concerns over their schedule coming into this one, though. Newcastle have already played Man United and Man City in the last week, the latter of which was a tough 3-1 loss. You’ll see below they’re a bit light on personnel, so they’re up against it here. However, keep the first half tight, and they could get across the line on adrenaline and the home crowd.
Team News: Guimaraes, Schar, Livramento, Krafth, and Miley are all out, while Murphy is in doubt with a neck issue. Ramsey returns from suspension though.
Predicted Lineup: Ramsdale; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Tonali, Ramsey, Joelinton; Elanga, Gordon, Barnes.
Barcelona
Barcelona’s form couldn’t be more different than Newcastle’s coming into this clash. They’re four wins in a row across all competitions, with 11 goals scored. Lamine Yamal has been absolutely unplayable lately, while the rest of their attack is razor sharp too.
Defensively though, there are cracks - even though they’ve conceded just once in their last four matches.
Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde are both out with hamstring injuries, meaning makeshift full-backs on both flanks. Frenkie de Jong is also sidelined, and Gavi won’t feature. That’s a lot of gaps. When it comes to the UCL, Barcelona haven’t kept a clean sheet in 11 consecutive matches, so at this level with a weakened backline, I’m worried.
Team News: Kounde, Balde, De Jong, Gavi, and Christensen are all out. Bernal started against Athletic on Saturday but was subbed at half-time with illness. Lewandowski is fit but may be managed off the bench.
Predicted Lineup: Joan Garcia; Eric Garcia, Cubarsi, Martin, Cancelo; Pedri, Fermin Lopez, Bernal; Yamal, Ferran Torres, Raphinha.
Newcastle vs Barcelona Stats and Trends
- Barcelona have gone 11 UCL matches without a clean sheet.
- Newcastle are the top scorers in this season’s Champions League with 26 goals.
- In 26 of Barcelona’s last 28 UCL matches, over 2.5 goals has landed.
- Newcastle have won all four home UCL games since losing 2-1 to Barcelona in September.
- Both teams scored in the reverse fixture and in two of their three all-time Champions League meetings.
Newcastle vs Barcelona Prediction
Barcelona have the better squad and the better form, and Yamal is in the kind of form where he can win a game on his own. I’d be surprised if they don’t score at least twice.
But this is all Newcastle have this year, so they aren’t exactly going to roll over. With a fizzing home crowd behind them, I reckon they make this tougher than NZ betting apps have it priced. Gordon and Harvey Barnes have pace to burn on the break, and Barcelona’s makeshift defence will have a long night dealing with balls in behind.
I’m leaning towards a Barcelona win, but I think Newcastle score. A 2-1 or 3-1 Barcelona win feels most likely to me. The visitors take a lead back to Camp Nou, but it’s tight enough to leave the tie alive heading into the second leg.

Newcastle vs Barcelona - The Ultimate Bet
Barcelona to Win and Over 2.5 Goals @ $2.75
I keep coming back to the goals in this one. Barcelona’s UCL record is clear: over 2.5 goals in 26 of their last 28 matches in the competition. Newcastle have scored in every single home UCL game this season, even their loss to Barcelona.
With Kounde and Balde missing, Barcelona’s defence is far from airtight. But Yamal is on fire, as is the rest of the travelling side’s attack, so they should get across the line.
Newcastle will get their chances, and I fully expect them to convert at least one. That’s what makes the over 2.5 goals and Barcelona win combination appealing at $2.75 on legal betting sites. Keep an eye out for the betting promotions on our home page too before locking in your bet.
