Premier League: Newcastle vs Everton

Newcastle are home at St. James’ Park on Sunday morning New Zealand time, with Premier League rivals Everton coming to town for a fascinating clash.

Technically, the two sides are close on the table - the hosts are 11th and Everton sit just two spots higher at 9th. But the latter got thrashed in the reverse fixture last November, and come into this match off the back of consecutive home losses. Can Newcastle capitalise on their opponent’s dip in momentum and catapult themselves through the mid-table ranks?

It’s that question I look to answer in this Newcastle vs Everton preview. From team news and stats to the latest odds on the best online sports betting sites - including a $3.60 tip I’m high on - there’s plenty to get stuck into.

Newcastle vs Everton Analysis

Newcastle

Newcastle have been brilliant on attack but are still wildly inconsistent in the Premier League.

Still, they’re in a nice pocket of form across all competitions this month, with four wins in their last five matches. They’ve racked up 15 goals in that stretch, led by Anthony Gordon who scored four in their 6-1 demolition of Qarabag in the Champions League. Gordon has moved into the central striker role since Nick Woltemade dropped into a deeper creative position, and it suits him.

Zoom out a bit though, and Newcastle are still only 11th in the league with 36 points from 27 games. That’s not good enough for a squad this talented.

Losing Bruno Guimaraes to a hamstring injury for eight weeks was a massive blow. Newcastle haven’t won a Premier League game without him since he joined the club. Their 2-1 loss to Man City last Saturday showed just how much they miss his control in the middle.

Team News: Guimaraes, Schar, Livramento, and Krafth are all out. Yoane Wissa is expected to be available after returning to training this week. Joelinton came off the bench midweek but could still be managed carefully.

Predicted Lineup: Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Woltemade, Barnes; Gordon.

Everton

Everton’s season has been strong overall, but the cracks are well and truly beginning to show now.

They’re ninth on the ladder, yet come into this clash in bad shape, having lost 2-1 to Bournemouth and then 1-0 to Man United on Monday. That makes this fixture critical - it’s either a genuine slump if they lose, or a perfect chance to regain confidence and nip things in the bud.

Jordan Pickford was shocking last time these two played, letting a weak Lewis Miley shot through his legs during their 4-1 thrashing. Everton can hurt teams with their directness - Thierno Barry is particularly dangerous - but their defence needs to come to the party. Against Newcastle’s front line, that’s not a given.

Team News: Jack Grealish is out long-term with a broken foot. Mykolenko is also sidelined, but Idrissa Gueye and Ndiaye are available.

Predicted Lineup: Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Keane; Garner, Gueye; Armstrong, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye; Barry.

Newcastle vs Everton Stats and Trends

  • Newcastle won the reverse fixture 4-1, with Malick Thiaw scoring inside the first minute.
  • Everton have lost their last two Premier League matches and have conceded in five of their last six.
  • Newcastle have scored 15 goals across their last five matches in all competitions.
  • The last three league meetings between these two before November’s 4-1 produced just three goals total.

Newcastle vs Everton Prediction

I’m with the majority of NZ betting apps on this one and think Newcastle will come away victorious.

They’re simply scoring too many goals at the moment for a defeat to feel like a viable option against a side like Everton. Gordon leading the line has added a new dimension, and Barnes and Woltemade have been brilliant around him. Sandro Tonali will need to step up with Guimaraes missing, but Newcastle’s attacking quality is still a step above Everton’s.

Everton’s will be well aware of what happened the last time they visited Tyneside in the league. That 4-1 hammering will be fresh in their minds, and losing Grealish for the season has taken away some creativity. Barry can score, and Ndiaye is tricky, so I don’t see a clean sheet for Newcastle. But I reckon the hosts will have too much firepower.

I’m backing a comfortable Newcastle victory with goals at both ends. This is one of my juicier football tips this week when it comes to risk vs return, I feel.

Newcastle Win and Both Teams to Score @ $3.60

I’m confident Newcastle will get the job done, but I don’t trust their backline to keep things tight for the full 90.

Without Schar and Guimaraes, there are gaps that Everton can exploit. Barry has five league goals and runs the channels well, while Ndiaye can create something from nothing. I’m pretty confident Everton will score.

Getting $3.60 at Sportaza for a Newcastle win with both sides finding the net feels like a great bet heading into the weekend.
