Newcastle
Newcastle have been brilliant on attack but are still wildly inconsistent in the Premier League.
Still, they’re in a nice pocket of form across all competitions this month, with four wins in their last five matches. They’ve racked up 15 goals in that stretch, led by Anthony Gordon who scored four in their 6-1 demolition of Qarabag in the Champions League. Gordon has moved into the central striker role since Nick Woltemade dropped into a deeper creative position, and it suits him.
Zoom out a bit though, and Newcastle are still only 11th in the league with 36 points from 27 games. That’s not good enough for a squad this talented.
Losing Bruno Guimaraes to a hamstring injury for eight weeks was a massive blow. Newcastle haven’t won a Premier League game without him since he joined the club. Their 2-1 loss to Man City last Saturday showed just how much they miss his control in the middle.
Team News: Guimaraes, Schar, Livramento, and Krafth are all out. Yoane Wissa is expected to be available after returning to training this week. Joelinton came off the bench midweek but could still be managed carefully.
Predicted Lineup: Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Woltemade, Barnes; Gordon.
Everton
Everton’s season has been strong overall, but the cracks are well and truly beginning to show now.
They’re ninth on the ladder, yet come into this clash in bad shape, having lost 2-1 to Bournemouth and then 1-0 to Man United on Monday. That makes this fixture critical - it’s either a genuine slump if they lose, or a perfect chance to regain confidence and nip things in the bud.
Jordan Pickford was shocking last time these two played, letting a weak Lewis Miley shot through his legs during their 4-1 thrashing. Everton can hurt teams with their directness - Thierno Barry is particularly dangerous - but their defence needs to come to the party. Against Newcastle’s front line, that’s not a given.
Team News: Jack Grealish is out long-term with a broken foot. Mykolenko is also sidelined, but Idrissa Gueye and Ndiaye are available.
Predicted Lineup: Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Keane; Garner, Gueye; Armstrong, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye; Barry.
