Chelsea
It’s hard to get a proper read on Chelsea sometimes.
They look breathtaking one week, then all over the show the next. Sitting just inside the top four is a solid spot to be in around Christmas, but their defensive record at Stamford Bridge is still a worry. They just hand teams way too many chances still.
Chelsea are doing some lovely stuff in possession, but they can be suspect at times too. If they lose the ball in bad areas against this Aston Villa team, they’ll be in trouble. Cole Palmer is obviously the key (everything good they do goes through him). If Aston Villa shut him down, I’m not sure where the creativity comes from.
Team News: Reece James is back but likely misses out here. Romeo Lavia is a doubt with a knock, while Levi Colwill looks to be out injured too.
Predicted Lineup: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Badiashile, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson.
Aston Villa
You just have to respect what Aston Villa are doing.
They’re third for a reason. Unai Emery has drilled this team so well that they rarely look rattled, even away from home. Their high line is always a talking point, but it works because the pressure on the ball is immense.
They come into this riding a red-hot 10-match win streak and look full of confidence. Ollie Watkins is a nightmare for defenders because he never stops running, and Morgan Rogers has added that bit of power and directness they needed. I reckon they’ll fancy their chances of extending their streak here, especially if the game opens up.
Team News: Ezri Konsa is fit to start after a scare last week. Matty Cash is still sidelined, so Kosta Nedeljkovic likely continues at right-back.
Predicted Lineup: Martinez; Nedeljkovic, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Onana, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, McGinn; Watkins.
