Tottenham
It’s been a rough week for Tottenham.
Their 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Nottingham Forest earlier this week exposed the same old cracks: a high line that looks no good when the press isn’t perfect, and a midfield that can be skirted around far too easily.
Spurs need a response. They have the attacking talent to hurt any team, but their issues at the back are a massive concern against Liverpool. If they can’t plug these gaps in transition, they could be in for a long afternoon.
On the bright side, they almost always find the net at home, and will be banking on that firepower to keep them in the contest.
Team News: Micky van de Ven is available but will have his hands full. Richarlison is pushing for a start to add some physical presence upfront, while Son Heung-min will look to exploit any space left by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Predicted Lineup: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Sarr, Maddison; Johnson, Solanke, Son.
Liverpool
Liverpool, on the other hand, look like the real deal.
The team is playing with a control and ruthlessness that was often missing last season. They are unbeaten in their last five, with their most recent 2-0 win over Brighton a masterclass in game management. The defending champs are defending better, controlling the tempo, and their forwards are firing.
Their adaptability gives me confidence too. They can control possession but excel on the counter-attack, exploiting Spurs’ major weakness. With a fresh Mohamed Salah and in-form Hugo Ekitike, they pose numerous threats. Betting apps suggest they are clear favourites for all three points.
Team News: Mohamed Salah is expected to return to the starting XI after being rotated. Hugo Ekitike should keep his place after scoring three in two games, likely forcing Luis Diaz or Cody Gakpo to the bench.
Predicted Lineup: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Ekitike, Diaz.
