FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Turkey vs Romania - Betting Tips, Odds & Prediction

Turkey are the most talented side in the entire playoff bracket - and also probably the most likely to do something stupid. 

This FIFA World Cup qualifying semi-final against Romania kicks off early on Friday morning New Zealand time in Istanbul. Vincenzo Montella has assembled a squad bursting with young attackers, but consistency has never been Turkey’s strong suit. Romania under 80-year-old Mircea Lucescu are built to frustrate exactly this kind of opponent. 

In this Turkey vs Romania preview, I look at why the home crowd could be decisive and where a Turkey win and over 2.5 goals combo at around $2.50 might be worth a punt on legal betting sites.

Turkey

Turkey were brilliant in qualifying. They finished second in Group E behind Spain, and gave them a genuine contest, earning a 2-2 draw in their final qualifier. Across six matches they scored 17 goals - a remarkable return.

Their individual quality is obvious. Arda Guler at Real Madrid is one of the most exciting young players in world football. Kenan Yildiz has been excellent for Juventus. Hakan Calhanoglu runs Inter’s midfield. These aren’t fringe players - they’re established at the very highest level of club football.

The Tupras Stadyumu will be hostile. Turkish fans in a playoff atmosphere are something else, and Romania will need serious composure. Turkey’s issue, as always, is at the back - they can be open defensively, and against a well-drilled Romania side this could leave gaps.

Predicted Lineup: Gunok; Celik, Demiral, Bardakci, Kadioglu; Calhanoglu, Kokcu; Yildiz, Guler, Akturkoglu; Yilmaz.

Romania

Romania got here through the Nations League, having finished outside the automatic spots. Under Mircea Lucescu - who came out of retirement at 79 - they’ve become a well-organised outfit that’s very hard to break down.

They impressed at Euro 2024, topping their group ahead of Belgium. Razvan Marin and Nicolae Stanciu are creative in the midfield, while Denis Dragus offers directness in the final third. Their defensive shape under Lucescu is always disciplined - his sides simply don’t give you easy opportunities.

Romania’s problem is firepower. They don’t score many, and against Turkey’s attacking depth, they’ll spend long periods without the ball. If they nick a goal from a set piece and sit on it, they’re dangerous. But if Turkey score first, Romania don’t really have the weapons to chase the game.

I think Turkey win this, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s harder than it should be. Romania will sit deep and stay compact, daring Turkey to break them down. Lucescu’s tactical discipline is their biggest asset, and they won’t make it easy.

Turkey have the attackers to find a way through, though. Guler and Yildiz can create something out of nothing, and Calhanoglu’s range of passing from deep gives them another dimension. If they’re patient and don’t panic, they should have enough to progress.

I’m going 2-1 Turkey. Romania will get a goal from somewhere - probably a set piece or a moment of transition - but Turkey’s home advantage and attacking depth should see them through. This is one for the live betting sites if you want to watch how the first 20 minutes play out before committing.

Turkey to Win and Over 2.5 Goals @ $2.50

Turkey’s qualifying campaign was defined by goals - 17 scored in six matches is no joke. Romania aren’t the type to park the bus for the full 90 without offering anything going forward either. Lucescu’s side scored in five of their six Nations League matches last season and will back themselves to find at least one opening in Istanbul.
