FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina

A World Cup playoff at the Cardiff City Stadium. I fancy this one to produce plenty of goals.

This FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff semi-final takes place on Friday morning New Zealand time. Wales thumped North Macedonia 7-1 in their last qualifier and Craig Bellamy has this squad playing with an attacking edge that would worry any team. Bosnia & Herzegovina are no mugs, though - they finished second behind Austria in qualifying and have a knack for frustrating better-ranked sides.

In this Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina preview, I dig into form before landing on an over 2.5 goals play at around $1.90 on best online betting sites.

Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina Analysis

Wales

Wales finished second in qualifying Group J, two points behind Belgium. Their 7-1 demolition of North Macedonia in the final match was emphatic - Harry Wilson hit a hat-trick and Brennan Johnson scored twice. That kind of result builds momentum heading into a knockout tie.

Bellamy has developed Wales into a side that presses aggressively and commits numbers forward. Johnson has been thriving at Tottenham and Wilson is a genuine goal threat from almost anywhere. David Brooks pulls the strings between the lines.

Home advantage is significant here. Wales have won five of their last seven at the Cardiff City Stadium, and the atmosphere for a World Cup playoff will be deafening. Bosnia haven’t been great travellers historically.

Joe Rodon is suspended, which is a nuisance - he’s their best centre-back. Chris Mepham and Ben Davies are also injury doubts. If all three miss out, their defence starts looking thin.

Team News: Rodon is suspended. Mepham and Davies are injury doubts. Wilson has a minor knock but is expected to be available.

Predicted Lineup: Ward; Roberts, Cabango, Sherring; Johnson, Ampadu, Allen, Sheridan; Brooks, Wilson; Cullen.

Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia finished second in Group H behind Austria. They beat Romania 3-1 and Malta 4-1 to finish strongly, and drew 1-1 with Austria in their last qualifier. Decent form for a side ranked 75th.

Edin Dzeko is 40 now and this will almost certainly be his last shot at a World Cup. He’s approaching 150 caps and still leads the line, even if his legs aren’t what they were. Benjamin Tahirovic adds quality in midfield.

But their away record is my concern. Bosnia have won just three of their last 10 away matches, and Cardiff on a playoff night is a difficult place to go. They’ll set up pragmatically and look to hit Wales on the break. Six of their last 10 games have seen over 2.5 goals, so they do contribute to open matches even when trying to be cautious.

Team News: No major absences reported. Dzeko and the full squad are available.

Predicted Lineup: Vasilj; Bicakcic, Ahmedhodzic, Katic; Gazibegovic, Tahirovic, Hajradinovic, Mujakic; Demirovic, Tabakovic, Dzeko.

Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina Stats and Trends

  • Wales have won five of their last seven home matches across all competitions.
  • Bosnia have won just three of their last 10 away fixtures.
  • Six of Bosnia’s last 10 matches overall have produced over 2.5 goals.
  • Wales scored 24 goals across eight matches in their qualifying campaign.
  • The last meeting between these sides was a 2-0 Bosnia win in October 2015.

Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina Prediction

Wales should have too much here. Their home form is excellent, Bellamy has attacking options all across the front line, and the crowd will be a factor. I expect them to start quickly and try to put the match to bed early.

Bosnia won’t roll over, mind you. Dzeko’s experience in these situations is worth something, and if they keep it tight for the first half hour, nerves could start creeping in. But I don’t think they have the quality to sustain pressure against a side this confident.

I’m going 2-1 Wales. Both teams have been involved in open, high-scoring matches recently, and I don’t see this as a cagey affair. For anyone looking at free bets ahead of the playoff round, this match has entertainment written all over it.

Wales vs Bosnia & Herzegovina - The Ultimate Bet

Over 2.5 Goals @ $1.90

Wales scored seven in their last home qualifier. Bosnia have been involved in matches producing over 2.5 goals in six of their last 10 outings. Neither defence has been watertight this campaign, and with Rodon suspended, Bosnia should get their chances too.

At $1.90 for over 2.5, I think there’s good value in a match between two sides who both like to attack. For those using NZ betting apps, this is the playoff semi-final most likely to deliver goals.
