Every Kiwi watching football this week has one eye on Tuesday’s 4:00pm slot. I’ll get to Iran vs New Zealand shortly. Before that, all four Group G and H openers are on the card, with Spain and Belgium both heavy favourites in theirs.

I’ve gone through the World Cup 2026 odds on major football betting sites and put together a four-leg multi at $5.05 from the day’s matches.

Top Picks for World Cup Day 5 | June 16

Spain vs Cape Verde

Spain to win ($1.10)

Spain are $1.10 and I’m not going to try make an argument against them.

Cape Verde are at their first World Cup, ranked roughly 67 places below, and Luis de la Fuente’s squad is absurdly deep even with Lamine Yamal nursing a hamstring problem from his Barcelona season. Pedri and Rodri control the middle while Nico Williams and Dani Olmo add pace and creativity out wide.

Spain drew their friendlies against Egypt and Iraq before a final warm-up against Peru in Mexico, and I’d put those results down to rotation rather than any real concern. This is a short price, but every multi needs a banker leg, right?

✓ Long Shot: Spain -2.5 handicap ($2.80)
✓ Extra Tip: Over 2.5 goals ($1.55)

Belgium vs Egypt

Belgium to win ($1.67)

I’d have Belgium as comfortable Group G favourites and $1.67 feels about right.

Kevin De Bruyne scored six goals across eight qualifying matches, and the wider squad won their group without a defeat. A 2-0 win over Croatia and a 5-0 hammering of Tunisia in their pre-tournament friendlies confirm they’re in strong form heading into the opener.

Egypt deserve respect - Mohamed Salah is still their main man and they conceded just twice in 10 African qualifying matches. I don’t expect a rout. But De Bruyne’s passing and Jeremy Doku’s pace on the counter should open enough gaps in Seattle.

There’s good value on the straight result across NZ betting sites.

✓ Long Shot: Belgium to win to nil ($2.70)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 2.5 goals ($1.85)

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay

Uruguay to win ($1.44)

Saudi Arabia’s preparation has been disrupted by a late managerial change, and while Salem Al Dawsari is still dangerous on the ball, their overall squad depth isn’t there for a game like this.

The 2022 Argentina upset feels a long time ago now.

I’ve been keen on Uruguay for a while. Federico Valverde and Darwin Nunez give them serious quality through the spine, and Marcelo Bielsa’s side have kept clean sheets in three of their last four wins.

At $1.44 this is the sturdiest leg on this ticket. If you’ve saved any free bets from the opening weekend, start here.

✓ Long Shot: Uruguay to win to nil ($2.10)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 2.5 goals ($1.85)

Iran vs New Zealand

Iran to win ($1.91)

I hate tipping against the All Whites, but I’ve got to be straight about it.

New Zealand lost 4-0 to Haiti and 1-0 to England in their Florida warm-ups, and outside Oceania they’ve won just once in their last nine - a draw with Norway the only other half-decent result. Chris Wood captains the side at 34, but he’s coming off a knee injury that cost him most of his Nottingham Forest season, and the gap in squad depth is real.

Iran aren’t a side I’m piling into with confidence either.

Two goalless draws against Cape Verde and Uzbekistan in November aren’t exactly inspiring. But they won 11 of 16 Asian qualifying matches, scored 35 goals in that campaign, and Mehdi Taremi is still a goal threat at international level.

Check betting apps for the best price - I’ve seen Iran range between $1.85 and $2.00 across the board.

✓ Long Shot: Iran to win to nil ($2.60)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 1.5 goals ($2.30)
