The best of the Saturday racing in New Zealand comes from Ruakaka, where the card is headlined by several tricky looking handicaps.

In what is a competitive card ahead of the first race we have run our eye through the card and picked out some of our best horse racing tips. As well as our exclusive tips we have highlighted three races which look to be the most competitive of the day. Whether you want to back a short priced favourite, or a horse at longer odds, read on as we have every angle covered.

Paper Romance – 2.00

BEST BET – Paper Romance

Whilst we try to avoid short priced favourites, we like backing winners and in race 2, Paper Romance looks hard to oppose. Having only raced six times, he’s unexposed to most in this field and he is coming off a win last time out. That form has been franked and conditions should be ideal, there is a lot to like.

THE DANGER – Guipago

Guipago is a danger and a threat. Having raced 19 times, he has two wins and three places. His second last time out at Ellerslie.came in a much higher grade than this and a repeat of that effort will see him go close.

VALUE BET – Ballinran

Ballinran could be a player at a price. He has a win and a third from two of his last three, his placed effort came in a tougher race than this. Capable on his day, he could be a nice alternative.

BEST BET – Towering Vision

Towering Vision has ran some big races in his career and comes down to a grade where connections will be hopeful of victory. Although without a win in 5, he placed seventh in the New Zealand Derby and almost took home the Waikato Guineas. Having returned from a five month layoff with two poor efforts, hopes will be high that he can return to a decent level of racing here.

THE DANGER – Getaway

Getaway is a real threat. Having raced only five times, there could be more improvement to come. She has two wins from those starts, including the final of the Lawn Winter Series. She is consistent here, from her three runs she is yet to finish outside of the places. There is plenty to like.

VALUE BET – Allaces

It’s hard to look beyond the chances of the top two in the market but Allaces is an interesting runner. After a slow start to her career, her last four runs have seen two wins and two placed efforts and she brings in a great level of consistency. Her last run was a career best effort and she could build on that here.

BEST BET – Arabian Songbird

In the eighth and most valuable race of the day, Arabian Songbird will be hugely popular in the betting. Having won five of her eleven starts, she has raced in and won some valuable handicaps. She resumes after a long break and hopes will be high a return to this level will see her return to good effect.

THE DANGER – Mossinvader

Mossinvader is an interesting contender. From seventeen starts he has has won once but placed a further eight times. He will want to step up from a few poor efforts of late, but he is consistent at this level and could leave his mark.

VALUE BET – Boxmoss

Boxmoss is our long shot of the day. Having had a break of thirteen weeks, he resumes after last seen being wining the Lawn Shed Winter Series Stayers Final. Despite the break, this shorter track won’t hold too many fears and he should have the stamina to hold out despite some rustiness. Could he be a contender for the places? Yes, we think he can.
