The Hawera card this Sunday is headlined by several competitive handicap races.

Ahead of this and the first race we have run our eye through the card and picked out some of our best horse racing tips.

As well as our exclusive tips we have highlighted three races which look to be the most competitive of the day. Whether you want to back a short priced favourite, or a horse at longer odds, read on as we have every angle covered.

BEST BET – Overdraft

Overdraft will hope to get punters off to the perfect start in the first race of the day. Last seen when finishing well down the field in the Auckland Cup, this is obviously much easier and he returns to a distance that has seen him win two of his three runs when attempted. There’s plenty to like and he should go well.

THE DANGER – Weneedashock

Weneedashock boasts a similar profile to Overdraft and looks to hold a major chance. Having had a long layoff, he looked fresh when finishing fourth on his reappearance and he should be fitter for this effort.

VALUE BET – Leprekhan

There aren’t many at a price who look worth siding with but Leprekhan does catch the eye. She has a good record here with two second place efforts from three starts, this is also her optimum trip so she can’t be discounted.

Zaffire Express – 4.40

Alpine Princess – 6.50

BEST BET – Into The Circle

In the fifth race of the day Into The Circle will be the short price favourite. Where many are either making their first start or arrive woefully out of form, she is by the most consistent horse in this field and looks the class angle.

THE DANGER – Zaffire Express

Into The Circle has shown in the past that she can be vulnerable to an improver or a newcomer and Zaffire Express could be that danger. She is well bred and and comes from a stable that does well with their newcomers, she wouldn’t have to be a world beater to land a blow here.

VALUE BET – Alpine Princess

The value play of the contest could lie with Alpine Princess. This will be her fourth start and she will hope to build on the third place effort she achieved last time out at Waipukurau. This is a similar contest and a big run can be expected.

BEST BET – Chicago Jack

It’s been a solid season for Chicago Jack without winning. He has placed on a numerous occasions at a higher level than this and returns to an easier grade here. Having gone almost two years without a win, his connections will hope for a victory here.

THE DANGER – Horonuku

There are multiple dangers but Horonuku is one we have picked out. In his last three starts he has placed on each occasion and is racing well of late. He will look to dominate from the front but whether he has the pace to last, remains the question.

VALUE BET – Bamboozle

Bamboozle is our value shot of the day and we don’t think he is without a chance here. His last run came at the track where he finished second and once again conditions should be perfect for him. Another big run can be expected.
