The Taupo card this Sunday is headlined by several competitive handicap races.

Ahead of this and the first race we have run our eye through the card and picked out some of our best horse racing tips.

As well as our exclusive tips we have highlighted three races which look to be the most competitive of the day. Whether you want to back a short priced favourite, or a horse at longer odds, read on as we have every angle covered.

Honour Roll – 3.10

Out of the Blue – 4.40

Honorable – 6.50

BEST BET – Honour Roll

Our best bet of the day comes in the third race of the day where Honour Roll takes a big step down in class. Having run well on debut, he then bettered that by landing a first win at Matamata. He found open company far too hot last time out but a return to this level has to be seen as a plus.

THE DANGER – Out of the Blue

Out of the Blue is a stablemate of Honour Roll and thanks to his connections he can’t be overlooked. Another class dropper he resumes after a four-month break and may find this race to his liking. He has the best form in the race and could be the best horse in the field.

VALUE BET – Honorable

Although the top two in the market set a good standard, Honorable could be one to watch. A second on debut was hugely encouraging, but he couldn’t back that up at Ruakaka. That was after a break, and he should be more of a danger here.

Pounce – 6.50

Back of the Bus – 17.00

BEST BET – Miss Janet

Miss Janet has the best form in the contest and is coming off a victory in open company. However, the only concern is that win came over four months ago. If fit enough, she should be good enough, but others are more race fit and could appeal.

THE DANGER – Pounce

Latoya makes appeal but the one we wanted to call out was Pounce. After a no show on debut, she improved dramatically to win last time out. Clearly highly thought of, she was pitched into a high level of racing to begin with and showed what she was capable of last time out. Has a chance.

VALUE BET – Back of the Bus

Back of the Bus could be the value play. Although he doesn’t have the form of the market leaders, he has two wins from five starts and is race fit. He’s done nothing wrong to date and deserves his place in this field. Worth a market check.

BEST BET – Cape Reinga

In the fifth race of the day Cape Reinga is expected to jump as the favourite. Yet to race, he is well bred and comes from a yard that knows how to ready a newcomer. He could be too good for this fairly limited field, but his lack of experience could be a concern.

THE DANGER – Tiago

The danger could lie with a horse that has experience and that is Tiago. Having had four starts, he has finished third on two occasions and has bumped into a good one on each occasion. That could be the case once again here, but he should give his backers a run for his money.

VALUE BET – Red Wings

Our value play of the day is Red Wings. He has had the benefit of one run and that was encouraging enough, where he finished third. That was a decent race, and he could build on that here given the fact that this race isn’t overly deep.
