GET READY FOR ROUND 25 - All You Need to Know Before Kick-off

NRL Round 25 Preview
News Highlights
- Daly Cherry-Evans confirms move to Hull FC. He will be leaving the Roosters at the end of this season.
- Josh Papali'i has just announced his retirement, and he’ll play his last home game this round against the Broncos.
- Braydon Trindall dislocated his shoulder last time out for the Sharks, which could have major top-four implications for the side.
The end is nigh! But before we get knee-deep in finals footy, there are still three more rounds of the regular season. It’s always interesting seeing teams that have everything to play for up against teams that don’t have anything to lose. Before Round 25 kicks off, the BettingTop10 team go through all the biggest news stories impacting the NRL.
Finals Race: Meet Your Newly Crowned Ladder Leaders - The Roosters!
After a thrilling game between the Sydney Roosters and Penrith Panthers, it was the Roosters that were victorious, and they have now taken over top spot on the ladder. The Panthers, however, are still the Premiership favourites according to NRL betting odds.
While we’re grouping these two clubs today, let’s talk about the PNG Chiefs, and their quest for Nathan Cleary or Sam Walker. But will they get them? With a couple of current and former Panthers players heading to the Chiefs, everyone’s got their eye on what Cleary does next.
If Cleary chooses to stay with his Dad and the Panthers, the Chiefs are said to be going after Walker as their second choice. Talks between Walker and the Roosters have been put on hold after the star turned down a four-year deal worth in the realm of $5 million.
Walker seems to be more motivated by money right now. If the Roosters don’t come up with a better offer, there’s a decent chance he’ll go to the Chiefs. Especially considering players at this club don’t have to pay tax on their income!
Fresh off the Roosters’ win over the Panthers, where Daly Cherry-Evans played one of his best games of the season, it was confirmed he would be moving to England. The 37-year-old has signed a one-year deal with Hull FC for the 2027 season.
A couple of weeks ago, things were looking excellent for the Cronulla Sharks. A decent winning streak and a top-four spot. What could be better? However, the tables have turned, and they’ve lost their winning streak and their top-four spot.
To make matters worse, they have also lost one of their best players, Braydon Trindall. Trindall dislocated his shoulder last time out in the Sharks’ loss to the Canberra Raiders. The Sharks are up against the Gold Coast Titans in Round 25, and will be desperate to snap their losing streak.
The Pack: All Eyes Remain on Latrell Mitchell
There have been some rumblings coming out of the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ camp that this could be the week that fans see Latrell Mitchell back on the field. The Bunnies’ CEO Blake Solly made some promising remarks about Mitchell, so what for official team lists!
It’s probably been the most high-profile injury for this season, as the Rabbitohs marquee player has seemingly suffered injury after injury. We’ve only seen Mitchell play a handful of games in 2026, and with the Bunnies a live chance of making the finals, they’ll need their star.
Moving on now, while the Raiders may realistically be out of finals contention, they’ll still be looking to see off Big Papa in the best way possible. Josh Papali'i is retiring from rugby league at the end of this season.
The Raiders play the Brisbane Broncos this round, and it will be the Raiders’ last home game of the season. Big Papa has played a whopping 340 games for the Raiders, making him the most-capped player in the club's history. So, expect a hero’s send-off!
Wooden Spoon Watch: Could The Dragons Avoid The Spoon?
So, you’re saying there’s still a chance! The St. George Illawarra Dragons beat the Wests Tigers for the second time this season. That victory has kept their slim chance alive of not being handed the wooden spoon at the end of this season.
Actually, the Dragons have been looking decent enough as of late. They are certainly coming home with a wet sail, giving fans hope for what’s to come next season. However, things aren’t all rosy for the Dragons, with Clint Gutherson still battling a knee issue.
Right now, the team one place ahead of the Dragons is the Broncos. Wouldn’t that be interesting? From Premiers to wooden spooners in just one season. As I already mentioned, the Broncos face off against the Raiders, who will be looking to put on a show for Big Papa.
The 2025 Premiers haven’t been playing anywhere near their best virtually all season. Now, Reece Walsh is sidelined, and scans revealed a high-grade syndesmosis injury. He is expected to have surgery on this injury, which has a recovery time of six to eight weeks. We likely won’t see the fullback again this season.
