Australia and Switzerland meet at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego on Sunday morning New Zealand time in a friendly that doubles as their last warm-up before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off next week. 

Both sides have named their 26-player squads and are firmly in tournament-prep mode. For Australia, it’s the second game on US soil after a 1-0 loss to Mexico last weekend. Switzerland thumped Jordan 4-1 in St Gallen a few days ago and have now relocated to San Diego, which serves as their World Cup base.

In this Australia vs Switzerland preview, I look at both squads, form, and what to expect from a game where goals feel likely. I’ve found a goals-market price that should interest those tracking football tips ahead of the tournament.

Australia

Tony Popovic named his 26-player World Cup squad on June 1, with 17 potential debutants at the tournament. Mathew Ryan captains the side at his fourth World Cup, alongside veterans Jackson Irvine and Mathew Leckie. Jordan Bos, the Feyenoord left-back who scored the late winner against Cameroon in March, looms as one of Australia’s most important players this summer.

I watched the 1-0 loss to Mexico last Friday and came away unconvinced. Australia were outplayed in the first half and barely touched the ball. After half-time they improved but it never felt like enough. Popovic’s approach - compact defensively, quick on the counter - is well established.

Nestory Irankunda’s pace off the bench is a weapon. The 20-year-old was electric during the FIFA Series in March, scoring twice in the 5-1 rout of Curacao.

Team News: Full World Cup squad available. Souttar and Leckie started against Mexico after long absences. Volpato and Yengi are uncapped and could debut.

Switzerland

Murat Yakin’s squad is loaded with top-flight European experience. 

Gregor Kobel and Manuel Akanji form a strong spine through the middle, and Granit Xhaka - now at Sunderland, closing in on 150 caps - is the most influential player on the pitch. Dan Ndoye had a productive season at Nottingham Forest and is already in good form ahead of the World Cup.

Their 4-1 win over Jordan on May 31 was professional rather than spectacular. Breel Embolo opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Ndoye doubled the lead, and Xhaka converted a second penalty late in the first half. More interesting was the 3-4 loss to Germany in March - Switzerland scored three and still lost, which showed their willingness to play on the front foot.

I expect Yakin to rotate. Switzerland open their World Cup against Qatar on June 13 and won’t want to risk injury here. Xhaka and Kobel might get limited minutes.

I’m tipping Switzerland to win, but not by much. Yakin will rest a few starters, and Popovic’s system is designed to frustrate stronger sides.

Where it’ll come unstuck is quality in the final third. Australia don’t have a reliable creator. Irankunda is exciting but raw, and I’m not convinced Toure is ready to lead the line against Akanji. Switzerland simply have a deeper squad and better individuals across the park.

A 2-1 Switzerland win feels about right. I can’t see Australia preventing the Swiss from scoring over 90 minutes, even with a rotated side.

Both sides need meaningful minutes for their World Cup squads, and friendlies this close to a tournament tend to be open. Rotation in the second half loosens things up. Popovic will push forward regardless of the scoreline - he needs to see his attackers against this level of opposition - and that should guarantee chances at both ends.

Switzerland scored four against Jordan and three against Germany in their two most recent friendlies. Australia, on the other hand, couldn’t prevent Mexico from scoring despite sitting deep for 45 minutes. When the Socceroos push forward - as they did after the break against Mexico - spaces open up at the back.
