Australia vs Turkey Prediction

Australia and Turkey open their World Cup campaigns at BC Place in Vancouver on Sunday afternoon New Zealand time, with Group D progression potentially riding on the result.

Turkey are rightful favourites. Seven wins from their last eight, a squad loaded with talent from Europe’s top five leagues, and the emotional weight of qualifying for their first World Cup since 2002. Australia’s form has been patchy - dominant in the March FIFA Series against weaker opposition, sluggish against Mexico and Switzerland in recent warm-ups.

In this Australia vs Turkey preview, I look at form, team news and the tactical dynamics of this opening fixture. I’ve also got an angle on the goals markets at over $3.00 for anyone checking football betting tips ahead of the tournament.

Australia vs Turkey Analysis

Australia

Australia are two wins from four in 2026, and both victories came against sides well below World Cup standard (Cameroon and Curacao).

Their Mexico and Switzerland games are the most accurate reflection of how they’re tracking. Against Mexico at the Rose Bowl, Australia were dominated for 45 minutes before improving after the break. Against Switzerland, the same story: outplayed early, rescued by second-half changes.

That slow-start problem is a real concern against Turkey. Going down early in a World Cup opener, in a group alongside the USA and Paraguay, would put Popovic’s side under immediate pressure.

I do think Australia will set up to frustrate, though.

Popovic has been drilling a compact shape and their best moments this cycle have come on the counter through Nestory Irankunda’s pace. Jordan Bos scored the winner against Cameroon from wing-back and managed four goals and seven assists for Feyenoord this season.

Team News: No significant injuries reported. Irankunda was booked against Switzerland but is available. 17 of the 26-man squad are World Cup debutants.

Predicted Lineup: Ryan; Herrington, Souttar, Circati; Bos, Irvine, Metcalfe, Behich; Irankunda, Hrustic; Toure.

Turkey

It’s now seven wins and a draw from their last eight for Turkey. Their 4-0 against North Macedonia featured four different scorers, and trailing Venezuela before winning 2-1 was a useful test of composure.

Arda Guler is their obvious threat. He’s got four goals and eight assists in La Liga this season, and he was involved in goals against both North Macedonia and Venezuela without starting either from the off. Hakan Calhanoglu scored nine in Serie A for Inter this season and dictates tempo from midfield. Kenan Yildiz at Juventus adds another dimension from the left.

I’m uncertain about how Turkey will cope with the occasion, though. Their last competitive fixture was the Kosovo playoff in late March. Warm-up wins against modest opposition don’t replicate tournament intensity. And Australia won’t roll over.

Team News: Elmali returned to full training after going off against North Macedonia and is available. Full squad reported fit.

Predicted Lineup: Cakir; Celik, Demiral, Bardakci, Kadioglu; Calhanoglu, Ozcan; Guler, Kokcu, Yildiz; Akturkoglu.

Australia vs Turkey Stats and Trends

  • Turkey have won two of three previous meetings, with the other ending in a draw, all in friendlies over two decades ago.
  • Australia have conceded first in both 2026 warm-up friendlies, against Mexico and Switzerland.
  • Turkey scored six goals across their two pre-tournament friendlies, with five different players on the scoresheet.
  • Australia won 11 of their 16 World Cup qualification matches across the AFC campaign.
  • Only five of Australia’s last 12 internationals have produced more than two goals.

Australia vs Turkey Prediction

I’m going with Turkey in a close one here.

Australia will frustrate for long stretches and Popovic will have them well-drilled in a low block. But the gap in creative quality is too wide. Guler and Calhanoglu alone can unlock any defence, and I’m not convinced Australia can produce enough going the other way.

Australia’s slow starts concern me most. If Turkey get ahead in the first half, I can’t see the Socceroos chasing the game against a side this composed on the ball.

A 1-0 or 2-0 Turkey win feels about right. If you’re tracking World Cup group markets through betting apps in NZ, the unders angle is where I’d be looking alongside a Turkey result.

Australia vs Turkey - The Ultimate Bet

Turkey to Win to Nil @ $3.00

Australia’s attack has been blunt against decent opposition this year. One shot on target across 90 minutes against Mexico. One goal from open play in both warm-up friendlies combined.

Popovic will set up to defend first, and Turkey’s backline - Demiral, Bardakci, Kadioglu - can handle what comes at them.

Turkey shut out both Romania and Kosovo across the World Cup playoff rounds and conceded just once in their two warm-up friendlies. At $3.00, I’m happy to back them winning without conceding.

World Cup openers reward patience and defensive discipline, and I’d be comfortable waiting until in-play on the best live betting sites if Turkey go ahead early.
