Champions League: Barcelona vs Newcastle

Yamal’s stoppage-time penalty at St James’ Park changed everything in this Champions League tie between Barcelona and Newcastle. Barnes had scored in the 86th minute, the home crowd was celebrating already, and then Thiaw tripped Dani Olmo in the box. Yamal did not miss, throwing an almighty dampener on Newcastle’s hopes of progression.

Now they have to go to Camp Nou and do it all again, and I’m not sure Howe’s squad has it in them. Newcastle haven’t beaten Barca in four attempts going back to 1997.

With the hosts coming off a big win at the weekend, I like the price NZ betting sites have them at heading into this second leg. Read on for my breakdown of this clash, including the best bets for those down under.

Barcelona vs Newcastle Analysis

Barcelona

The dust is still settling on Raphinha’s hat-trick against Sevilla on Sunday. That big win couldn’t have been better for Barcelona, particularly considering they rested both Yamal and Pedri for big stretches.

Camp Nou has been a fortress for them and I don’t use that word loosely. Only PSG have beaten them there in any competition since May 2025. Barca have scored in eight of nine Champions League games this season, though they’ve conceded in all nine too, which is the bit that keeps BTTS at $1.72 interesting.

There are cracks, however. Kounde out, Balde out, de Jong out, Christensen out. That’s a lot missing. Without Kounde’s pace on the right though, Newcastle’s width could cause problems.

Team News: De Jong (muscular), Kounde (hamstring), Balde (hamstring), Christensen (ACL), Toni Fernandez (knee), Torrents (knee) out. Gavi (knee) back but not match fit.

Predicted Lineup: Garcia; Araujo, Cubarsi, Martin, Cancelo; Pedri, Bernal; Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Raphinha; Lewandowski.

Newcastle

Gordon’s winner vs Chelsea over the weekend has helped raise spirits in the Newcastle camp. That was a clean sheet too, which they hadn’t managed for a while.

But that was Chelsea under Rosenior. Camp Nou is something else entirely and I keep coming back to one name – Bruno Guimaraes. Without him, I just don’t see how Newcastle control the midfield. Tonali missed the Chelsea game with illness, which has been running through the squad for weeks. Howe hopes he’ll be fit for Wednesday but even if he is, he’s not had the preparation you’d want for a game like this.

Gordon has 10 Champions League goals in 11 appearances this season. He’ll be the outlet, and Newcastle as a team have scored in all 10 UCL games, so writing them off completely would be daft.

At $4.25 for the win though? No. I don’t fancy it. Those looking for value on the away side might prefer the draw at $3.20 across most betting apps.

Team News: Bruno Guimaraes (hamstring), Schar (ankle), Miley (thigh), Krafth (knee) out. Tonali (illness) and Willock (muscle) doubts. Livramento available.

Predicted Lineup: Ramsdale; Livramento, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Willock, Joelinton, Ramsey; Gordon, Osula, Barnes.

Barcelona vs Newcastle Stats and Trends

  • Barcelona have conceded in all nine Champions League matches this season, including both meetings with Newcastle.
  • Newcastle have scored in all 10 UCL fixtures. Gordon has 10 goals in 11 appearances.
  • 28 of Barcelona’s last 31 home games have finished with over 2.5 goals.
  • Newcastle haven’t beaten Barca in four meetings – their sole win in this fixture was the famous Asprilla hat-trick in 1997.
  • Barca have won four of five, scoring 14 and conceding four.

Barcelona vs Newcastle Prediction

I did think about the draw here, I really did. Gordon’s a match-winner at this level and Newcastle have scored everywhere they’ve been in Europe. But I just can’t get past the Guimaraes absence. Without him they don’t keep the ball, Tonali’s fitness is uncertain, and at Camp Nou that Yamal and Raphinha pick you apart.

Flick’s rested his key players too. Barcelona at home in a knockout round after snatching a draw away – I’d want longer odds than $1.67 to go against them.

There will be goals, though. Barca haven’t kept a UCL clean sheet all season and Newcastle have found the net in every European game. I’m going with Barcelona 2-1, putting them through 3-2 on aggregate.

Barcelona vs Newcastle - The Ultimate Bet

Barcelona to Win and Both Teams to Score @ $2.60

Nine Champions League games, nine goals conceded. Barcelona score freely but can’t keep anyone out. Yet they bagged five against Sevilla and four against Villarreal, so there’s little to worry about in terms of the overall result.

Newcastle aren’t going to Camp Nou to sit in and hope. Not with Gordon in his current form. Barnes scored in the first leg, Murphy’s delivery has been sharp. They’ll get a chance, and the way Barca defend set pieces especially, I’d back them to take it.

Over 2.5 goals at $1.60 is the safer of my football betting tips. This has landed in 28 of Barca’s last 31 home games. But I still prefer the $2.60 for a Barca win and BTTS – it’s better value, and captures exactly how I see this playing out.
