England vs NZ Football Prediction

England and New Zealand meet in Tampa on Sunday morning New Zealand time in the first of two World Cup warm-up friendlies for Thomas Tuchel’s squad. It’s only the third meeting between these two nations, and the first in 35 years.

For the All Whites, this is a chance to bounce back from a 4-0 defeat to Haiti earlier this week. For England, it’s about settling into the Florida heat and getting their combinations right before facing Croatia on June 17.

In this England vs New Zealand preview, I look at both squads, the key absences, and where I think the value is in the goals markets. I’ve spotted a combined goals angle at a decent price for those chasing free bets this week.

England vs New Zealand Analysis

England

England’s March window was poor. A flat 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley was followed by a 0-1 loss to Japan, with Kaoru Mitoma’s first-half goal the difference. Both were experimental sides, though.

I wouldn’t read too much into those results. Tuchel was trialling fringe players and testing formations with half an eye on squad selection. The 26-man World Cup party is locked in, and this friendly is the first chance to drill their starting XI before Croatia.

Now that the squad is confirmed, this game is about rhythm.

Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, John Stones, Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford all trained on Tuesday and should feature. I expect Tuchel to name close to his strongest available XI for the first 45, then rotate. That first half is where I expect the damage to get done.

Team News: Saka, Rice, Madueke and Eze are resting after Arsenal’s Champions League final. Henderson is also late joining from Crystal Palace’s Conference League final.

Predicted Lineup: Pickford; James, Stones, Guehi, Burn; Mainoo, Bellingham; Gordon, Rogers, Rashford; Kane.

New Zealand

I want to be kind, but that Haiti result was dire. A 4-0 loss to a side ranked 83rd - Ruben Providence opening the scoring in the 12th minute before Lenny Joseph, Frantzdy Pierrot and Duke Lacroix completed the rout - is not how Darren Bazeley wanted to start this World Cup camp.

New Zealand’s form since qualifying has been rough.

They’ve won two of their last nine internationals. A 4-1 win over Chile in March was the high point, with Kosta Barbarouses and Elijah Just among the scorers. But defeats to Finland, Colombia, Ecuador and now Haiti paint a truer picture of where this squad is.

Chris Wood will captain the side. He’s had an injury-disrupted season at Nottingham Forest and will want minutes before facing Iran on June 16. Tyler Bindon is the other Forest connection in the squad and should anchor the defence.

Team News: Ryan Thomas is out with a hamstring strain. Joe Bell missed the Haiti match with a calf issue but could return for this one.

Predicted Lineup: Crocombe; Payne, Bindon, Boxall, Cacace; Stamenic, Bell; Garbett, Singh, Just; Wood.

England vs New Zealand Stats and Trends

  • England won both previous meetings 1-0 and 2-0 in New Zealand in June 1991.
  • New Zealand have lost five of their last seven internationals.
  • England failed to score in their last game, losing 0-1 to Japan at Wembley in March.
  • New Zealand have conceded eight goals across their last three defeats.
  • Chris Wood has 45 international goals across 89 caps for New Zealand, a national record.

England vs New Zealand Prediction

I can’t see anything other than a comfortable England win. The gap between these two sides is enormous - 81 places in the FIFA rankings - and while friendlies can produce odd results, form points one way.

Even without Saka and Rice, Tuchel has Kane, Bellingham, Rashford and Gordon available. That’s a formidable attacking lineup against a defence that just shipped four to Haiti. I expect England to score early and often in the first half, before the inevitable second-half rotation slows things down.

If you’re following this one on football betting sites, the goals market is the best way in. England need to score freely for confidence, and New Zealand don’t have the defensive structure to deny them.

England vs New Zealand - The Ultimate Bet

Over 2.5 Goals and England to Win @ $1.85

England have too much quality across every position. Tuchel needs a confidence-boosting performance after a frustrating March window, and New Zealand are the ideal opponents for exactly that.

Wood might nick one for New Zealand - he’s too good a striker to dismiss entirely. But I’d be surprised if the All Whites got through the first half without conceding at least twice. Their defensive record in recent months has been grim, with eight goals leaked across the defeats to Haiti, Finland and Ecuador alone.

At $1.85, England to win with over 2.5 goals covers the most likely outcomes, and I’m happy to put it up through the live betting sites available for this one.
