Arsenal vs Man City Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

The English season gets going at an unfamiliar venue on Monday morning New Zealand time, with Premier League champions Arsenal facing FA Cup holders Manchester City at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. 

Wembley is unavailable due to concert commitments, so the Community Shield returns to Wales for the first time in 20 years. Both squads are still piecing themselves back together after the World Cup. 

In this Arsenal vs Manchester City preview, I look at how each side is shaping up, and I’ve got a draw angle at $3.50 for those monitoring football betting markets ahead of the new campaign.

Arsenal

Arsenal’s pre-season has been mixed. They thumped MK Dons 3-0 and beat Girona 4-1, but then lost back-to-back to Real Betis (3-1) and Borussia Dortmund (3-2) at the Emirates. Most recently, they drew 1-1 with Como before edging them out on penalties.

I’m not panicking about it, though. 

Arteta has been managing minutes carefully, with most of his World Cup contingent only returning in the past week. Saka and Raya are back in training after their World Cup campaigns with England and Spain. Bruno Guimaraes, the big summer signing from Newcastle, has reportedly joined the group too and I wouldn’t be shocked if he starts here.

Centre-back is where it gets tricky. Saliba and Timber are both absent, which strips out Arsenal’s first-choice right side entirely. Gabriel and Hincapie will likely pair up, and that’s a solid enough duo for most opponents. Against City’s attack, though, I’m less certain.

Team News: Saliba is out for months with a back injury. Timber is weeks away with a groin problem. Zubimendi and Merino are on extended breaks after winning the World Cup with Spain. Raya, Saka, Rice, Odegaard and Bruno Guimaraes are all available.

Predicted Lineup: Raya; White, Gabriel, Hincapie, Calafiori; Rice, Odegaard, Bruno Guimaraes; Saka, Gyokeres, Eze.

Manchester City

We’re in a new era with City now.

Enzo Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola in late June after an extraordinary decade and took a largely youth-heavy squad to Asia for three friendlies. City drew 1-1 with Inter before losing on penalties, then beat the K-League All Stars 3-1 and Atletico Madrid 3-1 in Seoul. Semenyo has been impressive on the wing, and the Gvardiol-Dias centre-back partnership looked comfortable throughout.

I thought the Atletico result was the most telling. Three goals against a well-organised Diego Simeone side is no small thing, and I liked what I saw from City on the counter through Doku and Semenyo. It was a real departure from the Guardiola playbook.

Six first-team players returned to training on Wednesday, including Haaland and club-record signing Elliot Anderson. That’s only three days before kickoff. I’m not sure how much either can give over 90 minutes, but even half an hour of Haaland changes the game.

Team News: Rodri is a major doubt after back surgery and amid ongoing transfer talks with Real Madrid. Haaland and Anderson returned to training on Wednesday. Grealish is training alone with an uncertain future. Doku, Guehi and O’Reilly are all back from World Cup breaks.

Predicted Lineup: Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, Ait-Nouri; Reijnders, Anderson; Semenyo, Foden, Doku; Haaland.

• Arsenal beat City on penalties after a 1-1 draw the last time these two met in this fixture, in 2023.
• City won 2-1 at the Etihad in their most recent Premier League meeting in April.
• Arsenal have conceded in four of their five pre-season friendlies.
• City won two of three friendlies on their Asia tour.

I’m tipping a tight one here. 

Neither side is anywhere near full strength, and both managers have bigger priorities in mind than the Community Shield. Arteta is missing his best centre-back pairing. Maresca is coaching competitive football for the first time as City boss with half his squad having trained together for less than a week.

If you’re looking through betting bonuses this week, the draw at $3.50 is where I’d focus. Pre-season form goes out the window once there’s silverware on the line, and everything about this game screams caginess. I can see a goal each and penalties.

I’m calling it 1-1 at full time, with Arsenal probably edging the shootout given their record in these things.

Community Shields gravitate toward penalty shootouts. Six of the last 10 have gone the distance, and the 2023 edition between these exact two sides finished 1-1 before Arsenal won on spot kicks.

Neither squad is close to full readiness. Arsenal are without Saliba, Timber, Zubimendi and Merino. City are without Rodri and have only had Haaland and Anderson in training since Wednesday. I don’t see either side pulling away.
