Hull City vs Manchester United Prediction

Hull City and Manchester United meet at the MKM Stadium on Saturday night New Zealand time in the opening round of the 2026/27 Premier League season, with Hull returning to the top flight for the first time since 2017.

Michael Carrick takes his side to East Yorkshire looking to start his first full campaign in charge on the right foot.

In this Hull City vs Manchester United preview, I look at form, squad changes and where the goals might come from. I’ve got a bet on a tight United win for those after football expert tips this week.

Hull City vs Manchester United Analysis

Hull City

I’m curious about Hull this season more than anything.

They overperformed their xG massively in the Championship last season - finishing sixth with 73 points from data that projected them around 53. Oli McBurnie scored 18 goals and was the heart of their promotion push, but those numbers won’t hold up at Premier League level.

Jakirovic has been busy, spending over £50 million on 10 new signings. Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano was their biggest outlay, while Konstantinos Tzolakis arrives from Olympiacos in goal after Jack Butland picked up an arm injury. Matt Targett gives them Premier League experience at left-back.

Their pre-season was a mixed bag. Decent results against Turkish lower-table sides gave way to a 2-0 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt and a goalless stalemate with Nice. I’m worried about creativity - they didn’t score in either of their last two warm-up games.

Team News: Butland, Matazo, Gyabi, Drameh and Hughes are all out. Morita is sidelined with a calf problem. Gelhardt is missing with an ankle issue. Zambrano is a doubt.

Predicted Lineup: Tzolakis; Coyle, Sherif, Mendy, Targett; Gourna-Douath, Seri; Belloumi, Hjerto-Dahl, Millar; McBurnie.

Manchester United

United finished third last season with 71 points after Carrick rescued a campaign that had been sinking under Amorim. Bruno Fernandes broke the single-season Premier League assist record with 21, and they closed the season with four wins from five.

I’m not completely sold on their pre-season, though.

A 4-2 thumping by AC Milan in their final warm-up game was ugly, and they also lost to Wrexham. Amad Diallo looked sharp throughout and seems certain to start on the right, but I’d be surprised if Benjamin Sesko is available. A shin injury from May has lingered all summer and he hasn’t featured at all. Marcus Rashford is the likely option up front.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos - both summer arrivals - are more likely to get the nod in midfield than Kobbie Mainoo, who only returned from the World Cup against Milan and is short of fitness.

Team News: De Ligt is recovering from back surgery and won’t return until September. Ugarte is out long-term with a knee injury. Mount is a doubt. Sesko is unlikely to start. Mainoo is available but expected from the bench.

Predicted Lineup: Lammens; Dalot, Heaven, Martinez, Dorgu; Santos, Tielemans; Amad, Fernandes, Mbeumo; Rashford.

Hull City vs Manchester United Stats and Trends

  • Hull have never won a Premier League game against Manchester United in 10 previous meetings.
  • United won four of their last five league games to close out 2025/26.
  • Hull’s last top-flight campaign ended in relegation with 34 points in 2016/17.
  • Hull failed to score in their final two pre-season games against Frankfurt and Nice.
  • United conceded eight goals across six pre-season friendlies.

Hull City vs Manchester United Prediction

I’m backing United to win here, and get that fella with the long hair one step closer to a trim.

Carrick’s squad is comfortably the better side and the gap in individual quality is wide. Fernandes pulling the strings with Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo working the flanks - it’s a lot for a newly promoted defence to contend with on day one.

I do wonder about their clinical edge without Sesko, though.

Rashford leading the line is a different proposition. And Hull will be backed by a crowd seeing top-flight football for the first time in nine years. I can see United controlling this without blowing it open.

For those tracking odds through NZ betting apps, I’d look at the goals market. Opening-day fixtures tend to be cagey and I’m not convinced this one produces fireworks.

Hull City vs Manchester United - The Ultimate Bet

Manchester United Win and Under 2.5 Goals @ $3.40

Hull aren’t a bad side. They’ve spent well, Jakirovic has a system, and the MKM Stadium will create atmosphere.

But United’s defence was solid under Carrick last season. I don’t see Hull creating much against Martinez and Heaven. United should control possession and nick one or two before managing things from there. Over 2.5 hasn’t come in during any of Hull’s last three pre-season outings.

At $3.40 on some of the new betting sites available in New Zealand, I’m happy with a disciplined United win.
