Brentford vs Tottenham Prediction

Brentford and Tottenham kick off their 2026-27 Premier League campaigns on Sunday morning New Zealand time at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It’s the opening weekend, and this one already feels loaded - a Brentford side chasing Europe against a Spurs squad that spent over £200 million trying to forget back-to-back 17th-place finishes.

In this Brentford vs Tottenham preview, I’m looking at both squads’ pre-season form and what their injury lists could mean for this opener. I’ve got a goals-market angle worth considering for those browsing football betting sites this weekend.

Brentford vs Tottenham Analysis

Brentford

This team has four wins from four in pre-season, and their last one was a statement.

Brentford hammered Eintracht Frankfurt 7-0 at the Gtech in their final warm-up, with Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade both scoring twice. Thiago looks like he’s picked up exactly where he left off after bagging 22 Premier League goals last season. I’d be worried if I were a visiting centre-back.

Keith Andrews has had a settled squad to work with over the summer, which is a luxury Spurs can only dream of right now. Jannik Schuster has come in from Red Bull Salzburg to cover the loss of Sepp van den Berg at centre-back, and Callum Wilson and Jaidon Anthony have added depth to the forward line.

I think their home record is the biggest factor here.

Brentford won eight league games at the Gtech last season and missed out on European qualification by goal difference alone. Andrews won’t want a slow start.

Team News: Van den Berg is out for three months. Carvalho and Dasilva are long-term absentees. Milambo is close to a return from his ACL injury.

Predicted Lineup: Kelleher; Kayode, Collins, Schuster, Henry; Sangare, Jensen; Schade, Damsgaard, Ouattara; Thiago.

Tottenham

Where do you even start with Spurs?

Roberto De Zerbi has overseen a complete rebuild since arriving in March. Sandro Tonali cost up to £100m from Newcastle and Mateus Fernandes £85m from West Ham - the midfield spine replaced in two moves. Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton for £52m, with Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi joining on frees.

On paper, this looks like a different squad entirely. On the pitch, though, I have real concerns.

Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert are long-term ACL absentees. Dominic Solanke hasn’t featured since early August. Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski are training again but not match-ready. Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie haven’t played a single minute of pre-season. Pedro Porro only returned from Spain’s World Cup campaign last week.

Pre-season has been encouraging, I’ll give them that.

Unbeaten across seven friendlies, including a 2-1 win over Chelsea in Sydney and a 3-0 thumping of Hoffenheim at home where Mikey Moore scored twice. But friendlies without half your first-choice XI don’t tell you much about competitive readiness.

Team News: Simons and Odobert are long-term absentees. Solanke, Van de Ven and Udogie are major doubts. Kudus and Kulusevski are training but unlikely to feature. Maddison and Fernandes returned against Hoffenheim.

Predicted Lineup: Kinsky; Porro, Van Hecke, Senesi, Robertson; Tonali, Bentancur; Moore, Maddison, Tel; Richarlison.

Brentford vs Tottenham Stats and Trends

  • Spurs have won six of 11 Premier League meetings with Brentford, losing just once.
  • Brentford haven’t beaten Spurs in the league since May 2023.
  • Two of the last three Premier League meetings at the Gtech finished goalless or with two or fewer goals.
  • Brentford scored 16 goals across four pre-season friendlies, conceding four.
  • Spurs went unbeaten through seven pre-season matches.

Brentford vs Tottenham Prediction

I’m predicting Brentford to win here.

Spurs might have spent £200m-plus this summer, but half their squad is either injured or nowhere near match fit. De Zerbi could be throwing four debutants into a real Premier League atmosphere on day one, and the Gtech is not the place to break them in gently.

Thiago and Schade are a frightening combination when they’re both sharp, and they looked exactly that against Frankfurt. I do think Spurs will score - Richarlison has been in good pre-season form and Tonali is a serious upgrade in midfield - but I can’t see them keeping Brentford out.

For those comparing prices across NZ bookmakers, the goals markets look appealing here. Brentford need to attack. Spurs, with a patched-together defence, will be vulnerable.

Brentford to Win and Both Teams to Score @ $4.40

Brentford have too much firepower for a Spurs defence that could feature three or four new faces.

Thiago scored 22 league goals last season and looked razor-sharp in pre-season. Schade and Ouattara are both capable of chipping in.

On the other side, Richarlison managed 11 goals last term despite playing in a team that nearly went down. Tonali will want to announce himself, and Maddison could add creativity if he’s fit enough to start.

At $4.40, I’m happy to back a Brentford win with goals at both ends on the best new betting sites in New Zealand.
