Wednesday is the day I’ve been waiting for. Four group openers, four heavy favourites, and a chance for a parlay that pays close to 12x.

France and Argentina both start their title bids while Norway get Erling Haaland onto a World Cup pitch for the first time. Austria return after 28 years away.

World Cup 2026 odds are short across the board, so the value is in combining results with totals - I’ve done exactly that in my multi below. Have a look at prices across football betting sites before you commit.

Top Picks for World Cup Day 6 | June 17

France vs Senegal

France to win ($1.45)

Deschamps’ farewell tournament opens with a rematch of 2002, when Senegal shocked the defending champions. I’m not expecting a repeat.

Kylian Mbappe is fully fit, Ousmane Dembele collected last year’s Ballon d’Or and a second Champions League title with PSG in May, and Michael Olise bagged a hat-trick in the friendly win over Northern Ireland. France conceded just once across four of six matches at Euro 2024.

Senegal are a decent side - Sadio Mane playing his final tournament and Nicolas Jackson leading the line - but England and the Netherlands both shut them out at the 2022 World Cup, and France’s defence is a step above either.

Shop for free bets and take France at $1.45.

✓ Long Shot: France to win to nil ($2.40)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 2.5 goals ($1.90)

Iraq vs Norway

Norway to win ($1.22)

I’m tipping Norway comfortably and I wouldn’t be surprised if Haaland scored twice. He netted 16 goals during qualifying as Norway won all eight matches, beating Italy home and away along the way. Martin Odegaard captains the side after winning a first Premier League title with Arsenal in over two decades.

Iraq are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1986, and a draw with Spain in a recent friendly suggested they won’t roll over. But Haaland at this level, with Odegaard and Alexander Sorloth alongside him, is a different proposition. At $1.22 the price is too short to back alone, so I’ve folded it into my multi with a handicap.

✓ Long Shot: Haaland 2+ goals ($4.50)
✓ Extra Tip: Norway -1.5 handicap ($2.25)

Argentina vs Algeria

Argentina to win ($1.42)

Algeria qualified by winning their African group, and Riyad Mahrez gives them a creative outlet going forward. But this is the defending champion at work.

Lionel Messi came off the bench against Iceland and scored from the spot in a 3-0 warmup win - his hamstring is fine. At 38, this will be his sixth and final World Cup.

Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister run the same midfield from Qatar, and Lautaro Martinez has been lethal at club level all season. Algeria managed zero shots on target in their AFCON quarterfinal loss to Nigeria, and I don’t expect Emiliano Martinez to be tested much here.

✓ Long Shot: Argentina -1.5 handicap ($2.50)
✓ Extra Tip: Algeria under 0.5 goals ($2.00)

Austria vs Jordan

Austria to win ($1.33)

At $1.33 this is the shortest price of the day, and I think it’s fair. Austria haven’t played at a World Cup since 1998, but this squad is up for it. David Alaba missed Euro 2024 with a knee injury - he’s fit now and captains from centre-back. Christoph Baumgartner just finished his best Bundesliga season with 13 goals for RB Leipzig, and Ralf Rangnick has the group pressing high after topping their qualifying campaign with six wins from eight.

Jordan are tournament debutants and will drop deep, which could frustrate for a while, but Austria should wear them down. I’d fold this into a multi rather than backing it straight at these odds.

✓ Long Shot: Baumgartner anytime goalscorer ($2.80)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 2.5 goals ($2.10)
