Saturday Racing Tips - Ellerslie 05/09/25

The best racing this Saturday in New Zealand comes from Ellerslie, where the headline contest is the Group 1 Proisir Plate.

In what is an interesting card, ahead of the first race we have run our eye through the card and picked out some of our best horse racing tips. As well as our exclusive tips we have highlighted three races which look to be the most competitive of the day. Whether you want to back a short priced favourite, or a horse at longer odds, read on as we have every angle covered.

BEST BET – El Vencedor

The Group 1 Proisir Plate is the highlight of the card and it’s fair to say this race could land anywhere. One horse we like the look of is El Vencedor. A winner of four of his eleven Group 1 attempts, he was the winner of the Bonecrusher Stakes earlier this year. He has been off the track since April so has fitness to prove, but if he is fit and ready he could be a steal at a big price.

THE DANGER – Legarto

Legarto is likely to start the race as the favourite and just like El Vencedor she has fitness to prove. When last on the track she posted a solid third place effort in the Group 1 HKJC Breeders’ Stakes, but has tasted success previously at this level in the 2024 Herbie Dyke Stakes. A proven entity at this grade, she should run a big race here.

VALUE BET – Tomodachi

If looking to back a horse at a price, Tomodachi could be worth a second look. A winner of six of his nine career starts, which includes three of his last four, this will be his first attempt at this level but he could be a player.

BEST BET – In Haste

Acting as the perfect warmup for the Proisir Plate is the Group 3 Gold Trail Stakes. In Haste is likely to jump as the favourite for the contest and it’s easy to see why with two wins in her last three races. This will be her first crack at a graded contest but she arrives fit and firing and is hard to look past.

THE DANGER – To Cap It All

To Cap It All renews her rivalry with In Haste having narrowly lost out to her a few weeks ago in Taupo. Whilst there is form to overturn she has yet to finish outside of the places in any of her four career runs. She should give you a good run for your money.

VALUE BET – Little Black Dress

When it comes to our value bet for the race, a chance is taken on Little Black Dress. Having won her first two races, Having won her first two races, she could only finish fourth when facing off against In Haste and To Cap It All. With that race being her first since April, it’s fair to assume that she should be far more race ready here and should be able to produce a big run.

BEST BET – Hostility

Hostility is likely to be the popular pick in the Sir Colin Meads Trophy. Having just made two starts this strapping three year old colt has finished twice on two different occasions which includes his last start in Group 1 company. He wasn’t beaten that far in the Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes and could produce a big run here.

THE DANGER – Landlock

Another horse that was in the Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes was Landlock. He finished two places behind Hostility in that contest but could well overturn the tables here. He has experience on his side and that could prove vital.

VALUE BET – Bulgari

Our long shot of the day comes with Bulgari. A huge leap of faith is required as he has just made one career start and has a wide draw to overcome with. However, he showed real flashes of talent in that debut appearance and could be a horse going places. It will be interesting to see how he handles this step up in class.
