The fourth round of the US Open is upon us, and with more and more at stake the matchups are getting increasingly enthralling at Flushing Meadows. Places in the final eight on both sides of the draw are on the line on Sunday, and our bets focus on a couple of upsets in the men’s draw before we move our attention to the seemingly unstoppable women’s world number one in Aryna Sabalenka. Frances Tiafoe vs Daniil Medvedev: Tiafoe to win | $2.30 with Betista

A solid underdog to start the card, with local Frances Tiafoe looking like great value to knock off Daniil Medvedev at around $2.30 with most betting sites. This certainly won’t be an easy game for the American, but he has been playing some excellent tennis following a tough first round match, his latest win an impressive straight sets defeat of the in-form Valentin Vacherot. Medvedev is obviously a highly credentialled player and will require plenty of beating, but it’s been two years now since he’s made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam. While the 30-year-old is showing some signs of returning to something resembling his best, he’s not as imposing a figure as he once was and in front of his home crowd, Tiafoe is more than capable of causing an upset here.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Ben Shelton: Tsitsipas to win | $3.03 with Zoccer

Another value tip here, this time at more than $3 on many betting apps, and this time banking on the American to go down in front of his home crowd. To be clear, Shelton certainly deserves favouritism here – he’s the 8th seed and has been solid so far this event after being handed a difficult draw, being forced to face two former highly seeded players who have fallen down the rankings in Herbert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov. But this is not a bet banking on Shelton to falter – it’s one which recognises the danger posed by Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 28-year-old has been ranked as high as number three in the world and had no shortage of deep runs in Grand Slams, but for years now has been a shadow of his former self. But after not making it past the second round of nine consecutive Grand Slams, he appears to have found something which has been so patently lacking for many years now. He’s won his way through to the fourth round in three consecutive four-setters, two of which came against seeded players – first against 10 seed Arthur Fils in Round One, and then Jiri Lehecka (18th seed) last round. He is looking really dangerous at this event, and having already beaten a couple of similarly ranked players to Shelton, is very capable of winning this at long odds too.

It’s now been three year since Sabalenka lost a match at Flushing Meadows, and that does not look likely to change here. The world number one is the two-time reigning champion here and made the final the year before that, and has effortlessly made her way through to the fourth round this year with three consecutive straight sets victories. Her opponent in this one will have plenty of local support behind her, but Townsend is a doubles player at heart. She’s won three major titles in the women’s doubles and remains a live hope this year, but this is the furthest she’s ever been in the singles draw. She’s playing every day at the minute, alternating doubles and singles matches, and while it’s an excellent effort to still be alive in both of them, she will struggle against the power of Sabalenka in this one. Expect another comfortable straight sets win for the favourite in the women’s draw.
