Wednesday Racing Tips - Ashburton 24/12/25

In the fourth race of the day, Villasanti is one of our favourite bets of the day. Having had eight starts, remarkably he has placed in each and every run. He has amassed five seconds and three thirds, but here looks to be his best chance. Having taken a step down in class, conditions should be perfect and he can finally get off the mark at the ninth time of asking.

THE DANGER – Red Label

Despite the appeal of Villasanti at the top of the market, Red Label looks to be the obvious danger. Despite getting off to a bumpy start in her career, her last two runs have offered up serious improvement as she has finished in the places. She is another who takes a step down in class and a bold run can be expected here.

VALUE BET – Knockingatthedoor

There are risks to backing both Villasanti and Red Label as both have had several goes at trying to win their first race. With both vulnerable to an improver, that improver could be Knockingatthedoor. Following an encouraging second on debut, he found weekend racing much too difficult and returns back to a non-metro field here. Whilst he has plenty to prove, a return to calmer waters could reproduce a performance close to that promising debut showing.

BEST BET – Miss Ziggy

In the penultimate race of the day, Miss Ziggy is by the most interesting runner. Having had six weeks off the track, she takes a huge step down in class here with her last run coming in the 1000 Guineas. She finished ninth in that contest and before that placed in a Group 3 contest. She has the most class and could be hard to stop.

THE DANGER – Pogacar

If looking to take Miss Ziggy on, it could be that Pogacar is the right alternative. Whilst he hasn’t raced anywhere near the level of Miss Ziggy, he is a progressive type and has won his last two races. He has been off for ten weeks but his last victory came at the course. If raring to go he could be worth siding with.

VALUE BET – Esperimento

Whilst those at the top of the market are likely to come out on top, if you want to back one at a price, it could be worth siding with Esperimento. Havjng raced at a decent level, she has placed around the track before. She is coming off a win which came in a decent handicap at Cromwell. Whilst this requires more, she is one of the form horses of the race.

Sadalsuud – 41.00

BEST BET – Moon Goddess

The second race of the day is a wide open maiden where Moon Goddess is the tentative favourite. She has made four starts and has placed on both of her last two runs. The penny could be finally dropping and a win here looks more than possible.

THE DANGER – Ten Shillings  

In races of this nature, it always makes sense to look at horses that could take a leap from from their debut and that could well be Ten Shillings here. Having finished third on debut, that run offers up plenty of encouragement and he will know much more about his job here. He could find himself at the business end of affairs here.

VALUE BET – Sadalsuud

In a race where every horse in the field will have a chance of landing the spoils, Sadalsuud shouldn’t be ignored. The rank outsider, he represents decent connections and is reasonably bred. He finished sixth of twelve on debut and whilst he was no match for the winners, there could be improvement to come. At a huge price, he could outrun those odds.
