Aston Villa

Europa League winners. Fourth in the Premier League. A club-record signing smashed with Johan Manzambi’s arrival from Freiburg for nearly 60 million pounds. It sounds brilliant on paper, but the summer has been chaotic.

Morgan Rogers gone to Chelsea for 117 million. Youri Tielemans triggered his release clause for Manchester United. Digne off to PSG. That’s a spine gutted before the Champions League campaign even begins.

Alejandro Garnacho coming in on loan from Chelsea has promise, and I liked what I saw of him in the 3-1 win over Indonesia All-Stars. Joao Gomes, signed from Wolves for 34 million, gives them another body in midfield. But the squad feels thinner than last season, especially up front.

Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins are both on extended breaks after the World Cup. Ezri Konsa is in the same position. Manzambi is also expected to arrive late. That’s four first-choice players who won’t feature in Hong Kong.

I’m leaning Bayern here, though I wouldn’t put much on the result itself. Kompany’s squad depth is frightening even without Kane and Musiala. Palhinha and Kimmich alone would upgrade most midfields in Europe.

Villa are in transition. Losing Rogers and Tielemans rips out the spine of last season’s side, and Garnacho hasn’t had enough time alongside his new teammates to click yet. I can see Emery treating this as a fitness exercise more than anything, with the Super Cup against PSG just five days later.

Both sides will rotate freely. Defensive lapses at both ends are inevitable, and goals will follow. I won’t pretend I can predict the scoreline - it could be anything from 2-1 to 4-3.
