Brighton vs Aston Villa Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

Week one of the 2026-27 Premier League season continues with Brighton hosting Aston Villa at the American Express Stadium on Monday morning New Zealand time. 

I think we’re in for a fascinating contest here. Villa are reigning Europa League champions but arrive with a squad in pieces. Brighton finished eighth last season and look in better shape despite their own injury worries.

In this Brighton vs Aston Villa preview, I look at both sides’ readiness and where I see value in the football betting markets. I’ve got a goals angle worth backing for those eyeing opening-weekend prices.

Brighton

Brighton are four wins from four in pre-season. Strasbourg were beaten 4-3 during a training camp in Austria before Roma 3-0 and Bologna 1-0 at the Amex. Fabian Hurzeler knows what he wants from this side, and new signings Pascal Struijk and Diego Gomez have both featured prominently.

I’m worried about their injury list, though. 

Mitoma is out with a hamstring problem and Minteh is looking at two to three months on the sidelines after getting hurt against Roma. Ferguson hasn’t trained all summer. Baleba has an ankle issue and may also be on his way to Manchester United. That’s four key players gone before the campaign has even started.

Daniel Welbeck will lead the line after 13 goals last season, with Rutter and Gross providing experience through the middle. I think they’ll cope, but depth is going to be tested - particularly with a Conference League qualifier against Tromso on Thursday, three days before this.

Team News: Mitoma, Minteh, Ferguson, Tzimas and Baleba are all out. Hinshelwood is being assessed for fitness.

Predicted Lineup: Verbruggen; Veltman, Igor, Dunk, Estupinan; Gross, Hinshelwood; Adingra, Rutter, Osman; Welbeck.

Aston Villa

Villa’s summer has been chaotic. 

Morgan Rogers left for Chelsea for a British-record £117m between Premier League clubs, and Onana tore his ACL at the World Cup. Record signing Manzambi hasn’t trained since arriving from Freiburg because of a knee injury picked up with Switzerland.

Their pre-season is reflective of this. Five defeats in eight friendlies - Porto, Real Sociedad, Bayern, PSG in the Super Cup and Gladbach all beat them. Abraham picked up an injury scare in the Gladbach loss too, which could leave Watkins short of strike support.

I don’t want to read too much into these pre-season results, though. 

Watkins and Konsa were given extended breaks after England’s World Cup campaign, while Martinez had Argentina duty. They only reported back this week. Emery will have them available for this match, and that alone changes the complexion of the side.

But readiness is a different question. Watkins hasn’t played a minute of pre-season. Garnacho, in on loan from Chelsea, has barely featured after a facial injury. Emery is going to have to piece together a starting eleven from whatever’s fit, and that’s not an easy ask on the road.

Team News: Onana, Manzambi, Gomes, Madjo and Bailey are all out. Abraham is a doubt. Garnacho is unlikely to start.

Predicted Lineup: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, McGinn; Buendia, Barkley, Hemmings; Watkins.

• Villa have won four of the last six Premier League meetings between these two sides.
• Brighton won nine of 19 home league matches last season, losing just four.
• The last meeting at the Amex was a 4-3 Villa win in December 2025.
• Recent H2H meetings average close to three goals per game.
• Villa have scored in five of the last six meetings between these sides.

I do think Brighton win this one. There’s too much uncertainty around Villa’s squad for me to back them at the Amex on opening day.

Emery is a brilliant manager. But form and fitness matter more than reputation in the first week of a new season, and Rogers’ absence strips them of the player who drove so much of their creativity last year.

Brighton at home are a tough proposition. Hurzeler has had a full pre-season to work with the core of his squad. If you’re scanning new betting sites for opening-weekend prices, I’d be looking at Brighton’s match odds here. $2.25 feels generous for what they offer at the Amex.

Over 2.5 Goals @ $1.65

I know $1.65 isn’t a huge price. But I’m confident in this one.

Recent meetings between these two average close to three goals per game, including that 4-3 at this ground last December. Emery won’t set up defensively, even away from home. And with both defences depleted by injuries and departures, I can’t see this being a cagey affair.

At $1.65 it’s a solid anchor for any multi-bet on the betting apps NZ punters are using this season.
