Chelsea vs Spurs Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

Chelsea and Tottenham meet at Accor Stadium on Saturday night New Zealand time in the headline fixture of the Sydney Super Cup, a pre-season friendly with plenty of intrigue despite the exhibition tag.

It’s the first time these London rivals have played outside of England. Both clubs are under new management - Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, Roberto De Zerbi at Spurs - and using this tour to reshape squads after very different 2025-26 campaigns.

In this Chelsea vs Tottenham preview, I look at both touring squads and where the goals markets are worth targeting. I’ve got an over 2.5 goals angle at a solid price for those checking football tips this week.

Chelsea

This is Alonso’s first real look at his squad in front of cameras. 

Chelsea finished 10th last season on 52 points - miles from where a club spending like they do should be. Cole Palmer wasn’t selected for England’s World Cup squad and will want to prove a point, while Joao Pedro scored 20 goals last season only to get snubbed by Brazil’s selectors. Both are motivated.

Their touring squad is thin on experience. However, Fofana, Colwill, Hato and Delap give Chelsea a solid spine. And the academy contingent will be eager to impress under a new manager.

Team News: Estevao is doubtful with a hamstring problem. Emegha and Quenda were left in London with injuries. James, Enzo Fernandez, Neto, Caicedo and Gusto are on post-World Cup leave.

Predicted Lineup: Jorgensen; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill, Hato; Lavia, Essugo; Palmer, Kellyman, Gittens; Pedro.

Tottenham

Spurs scraped to 17th last season. Crazy, right?

De Zerbi has a massive job on his hands, but the summer recruitment looks ambitious. Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Andy Robertson from Liverpool are headline additions. Fernandes was the only one of the three to feature in the 2-0 win over Auckland FC at Eden Park last Sunday, coming off the bench in the second half.

Dane Scarlett scored inside 12 minutes against Auckland and Richarlison added a second with 20 minutes left. Spurs controlled the match comfortably in front of a record 40,112 fans at Eden Park.

I’ve got more faith in their available squad depth than Chelsea’s for this fixture. Maddison, Solanke, Richarlison, Gallagher, van de Ven and Moore are all in the touring party, and with 35 players, De Zerbi has plenty to work with.

Team News: Romero, Porro, Senesi, Spence, Bentancur and Sarr are on post-World Cup leave. Kulusevski, Simons, Odobert and Vicario are out injured. Tonali, Robertson and van Hecke are available but didn’t feature against Auckland.

Predicted Lineup: Kinsky; Gray, van Hecke, Danso, Udogie; Tonali, Gallagher; Moore, Maddison, Tel; Solanke.

• Chelsea won both Premier League meetings in 2025-26, 1-0 in November and 2-1 in May.
• Spurs haven’t beaten Chelsea since a 2-0 home win in February 2023.
• Both teams scored in two of the last four Premier League meetings, including the 3-4 and 2-1 results.
• Spurs attracted a record NZ crowd of 40,112 for their pre-season friendly at Eden Park.
• Chelsea are missing at least five regular starters due to post-World Cup leave.

I’m leaning towards Spurs here, which feels odd given how badly last season went. 

But their touring squad looks stronger on paper. More established first-choice players, an extra match already completed, and De Zerbi has had more of his key names around him in training. Chelsea’s group is young and talented but raw.

Palmer and Pedro could easily dominate a half each and drag Chelsea through on their own - I wouldn’t be shocked. But I think the balance of squads favours Spurs across 90 minutes, especially if Alonso rotates from the Western Sydney Wanderers match.

Pre-season defending is always loose. Both managers want their attacking players firing, and neither back line will be settled. I could see 2-1 either way. If you’re tracking this one on the best sports betting apps in NZ, focus on goals over the match result.

Over 2.5 Goals @ $1.75

Both managers want their forward players sharp. Palmer, Pedro and Delap will be chasing goals for Chelsea. Richarlison looked lively against Auckland, Solanke needs a strong pre-season after a poor league campaign, and Maddison will be looking to impress De Zerbi from the off.

Pre-season defences are typically disorganised, with new partnerships still forming. Chelsea could field a back line featuring academy graduates alongside Fofana and Colwill - not exactly a settled unit. Spurs without Romero and Porro are short on defensive familiarity too. The last four competitive meetings between these two produced 12 goals.
