News Highlights

  • City Leave Anfield With Six Wins From Six
  • Glasner’s Return to Selhurst Park Goes Wrong
  • Solanke Rescues Tottenham as Fulham Collapse Late

After three weeks off, the Premier League came back with a bang last week. Heading into the international break, I wondered if anyone could get near Manchester City when action resumed. Spoiler alert: Liverpool couldn’t. Further down the ladder, Tottenham finally scored a goal worth celebrating, even if it only got them a point. Here’s a breakdown of all the Premier League news you may have missed last week.

City Leave Anfield With Six Wins From Six

I didn’t see this one getting away from Liverpool like it did. They were competitive in a goalless first half, and Gianluigi Donnarumma needed a string of saves to protect City’s clean sheet.

Then Ryan Gravenberch picked up a second yellow card in the 62nd minute. City scored three times in 13 minutes once Liverpool were down to 10 men.

Erling Haaland pounced on a rebound in the 65th minute and Jeremy Doku curled one into the top corner three minutes later. Rayan Cherki added the third on 78 minutes after a slick team move. If you’d backed Liverpool on any of the best betting apps at kick-off, that red card was the moment it all went wrong.

Liverpool drop to ninth after their first league defeat of the season. City are the only side left with a perfect record.

Arsenal are three points off them after a nervy 2-1 comeback win over Leeds United at the Emirates. Leeds were the better side for an hour, and Arsenal managed just one shot on target in the first half. James Justin gave the visitors a deserved lead early in the second half. Riccardo Calafiori levelled within minutes, and substitute Bruno Guimaraes finished off a lovely team move to win it.

Leeds had been unbeaten before Saturday. I thought they were unlucky.

Brighton & Hove Albion are third after a 2-0 win at Sunderland. Maxim De Cuyper scored early in the second half before Pascal Struijk was sent off following a VAR review. Brighton coped fine with 10 men, and substitute Jaouen Hadjam sealed it in stoppage time on his Premier League debut. That’s three straight league wins without conceding.

Chelsea’s 5-1 thrashing of AFC Bournemouth was the biggest result of the round. Cole Palmer, fresh from signing a new contract until 2034, set up the opener. Jordan Henderson, now 36, scored it and then set up Morgan Rogers a minute later. Henderson curled in a free-kick for his second in the 70th minute, and Joao Pedro also bagged a brace. It was Chelsea’s first league win since the end of August, and they’re up to sixth.

Glasner’s Return to Selhurst Park Goes Wrong

Oliver Glasner’s first trip back to Selhurst Park didn’t go to plan. Dan Ndoye had Nottingham Forest ahead inside three minutes after a poor backpass from Anan Khalaili, and Forest should’ve been out of sight by half-time.

Morgan Gibbs-White rattled the crossbar. Walter Benitez then pulled off a point-blank save to deny Liam Delap.

Crystal Palace punished them. Daichi Kamada scored his first Premier League goal in the 41st minute, and Jefferson Lerma headed in a second in first-half stoppage time. Yeremy Pino added a third on 59 minutes after Jorgen Strand Larsen’s effort was saved.

Forest had 16 shots in the first half alone. I’d be worried if I were a Forest fan, though. They’ve won one of six and drop to 14th, two places below Palace.

Solanke Rescues Tottenham as Fulham Collapse Late

Tottenham are still winless, but at least they came away from Old Trafford with a point. Bryan Mbeumo gave Manchester United the lead in the 73rd minute, and Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for violent conduct. Dominic Solanke still found a stoppage-time equaliser, getting a touch on Sandro Tonali’s cross.

I think Tottenham deserved it. Sofascore had them on 1.56 expected goals to United’s 0.77. Three points from six games has them 18th, though.

United aren’t in much better shape. Six points from six is a poor return, and they’re 13th.

Fulham were minutes away from their first win of the season at Ipswich Town. Ryan Sessegnon’s low drive gave them the lead in the 55th minute, but Abdoul Ouattara smashed in a 30-yard equaliser in the 88th. Dara O’Shea then headed home Jack Clarke’s free-kick in stoppage time.

Fulham had the better xG too, 1.81 to 1.15, according to Sky Sports. They’re bottom on two points and still looking for their first league win.

Bournemouth are 17th and also winless after their hiding at Stamford Bridge. Coventry City are 19th on three points with a game in hand.

That game in hand is Coventry’s home clash with Newcastle United at 8am NZDT on Tuesday, and a win would take them out of the bottom three. For anyone after football betting tips, Gameweek 7 starts with Everton v Chelsea at 12:30am NZDT on Sunday. I’ll be watching Nottingham Forest v Arsenal at 4:30am NZDT on Monday on the best live betting sites.
