EPL Weekly Wrap Gameweek 7
News Highlights
- Seven From Seven at the Etihad
- Still One League Win for Man United
- Tottenham the Last Side Without a Win
Seven games in, and Manchester City still haven’t dropped a point. I thought Arsenal would be the early pacesetters, but I was wrong: City have won every league game so far and Erling Haaland can’t stop scoring. Brighton also put five past Crystal Palace, while Tottenham are now the last club in the division without a league win.
For anyone sizing up football betting markets before Gameweek 8, here’s a breakdown of all the Premier League news you may have missed last week.
Seven From Seven at the Etihad
Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3-2, and as the scoreline suggests, this was a pretty close one.
Phil Foden opened the scoring in his first start since his red card at Manchester United, and Daizen Maeda had Ipswich level within three minutes. Haaland then headed in Mateo Kovacic’s cross on 34 minutes and added another in the 69th, before Zian Flemming’s late penalty set up a nervy finish.
Haaland also had a hat-trick goal ruled out by VAR. He’s now on 12 goals in all competitions - subtract him, and I don’t think City are top of the table.
Arsenal are three points back after a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest that I’d struggle to call convincing. Noni Madueke’s late strike took a big deflection off Jair Cunha on its way in, and it was Arsenal’s only shot on target all game. It was also the first time since 2023 that they’d gone 70 minutes of a Premier League match without testing the goalkeeper.
Bayern Munich are up next in a Champions League midweeker. I’d want a lot more from Arsenal’s attack before that one.
Brighton are the big movers for me, though. They led Crystal Palace 3-0 inside 10 minutes, starting with a Jaydee Canvot own goal. Diego Gomez then scored a long-range stunner, and Yasin Ayari added a deflected third.
Charalampos Kostoulas and Jack Hinshelwood finished it off in the second half. Brighton are only the ninth side in Premier League history to score three times inside the first 10 minutes of a match. Their last four league wins have come by a combined 15-0, and they’re third on 16 points.
Liverpool climbed to fifth with a 2-1 comeback win at Brentford, with Alexander Isak scoring the winner on his return from injury. Brentford finished with nine men after Yehor Yarmoliuk and Vitaly Janelt were sent off, and it was their first league defeat of the season. Chelsea are fourth after winning 2-0 at Everton.
Still One League Win for Man United
Manchester United drew 1-1 at Leeds United, which leaves them with one win from their first seven league games.
Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the 35th minute from Youri Tielemans’ pass. Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled six minutes after the break, turning in Tarik Muharemovic’s knockdown from a corner.
That’s five games without a win in all competitions. I thought United looked more organised at Elland Road, but they’re 13th on seven points and the attack looks blunt.
Leeds won’t mind the point. Calvert-Lewin’s goal was his seventh in his last seven Premier League appearances, and Leeds are seventh on 10 points.
Newcastle had a worse week. A 4-1 loss at Coventry City was followed by a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, and I don’t see an easy fix for a team 11th on eight points.
Tottenham the Last Side Without a Win
Bournemouth and Fulham both picked up their first league wins of the season, which leaves Tottenham as the only club yet to win a Premier League game.
Bournemouth beat 10-man Sunderland 2-0 at the Vitality. Marcus Tavernier headed in Evanilson’s cross after six minutes, and Kevin Danso was sent off 11 minutes later for hauling Evanilson down as he went through on goal. Evanilson scored the second three minutes into the second half.
That’s four straight league defeats for Sunderland. They’re 19th on four points, with Lech Poznan to come in the Europa League this week.
Fulham beat Hull City 1-0 at Craven Cottage, and Hull didn’t manage a single shot on target. It wasn’t pretty, but Fulham are up to 17th on five points.
Nottingham Forest dropped into the relegation zone after the Arsenal loss. I thought they defended well enough for a point, but goals have been hard to come by all season.
Tottenham are bottom on three points from six games and host Coventry City next. They’re also bottom of the league for goals scored. They finished 17th last season, and I think another relegation scrap is coming if they don’t win this one. I’d still back Tottenham at home, but I wouldn’t be confident.
For NZ fans comparing new betting sites ahead of the next round, Tottenham against Coventry kicks off at 8am NZT on Tuesday. Gameweek 8 then features Aston Villa against Manchester City at 12:30am NZT on Sunday, with Chelsea hosting Tottenham at 5:30am NZT the same morning. If you’re sticking with the best legal sports betting sites, that London derby looks like the pick of the round.
