News Highlights

  • Ayari Gives Brighton a First Win at Manchester City
  • Everton Finally Win on the Road
  • Coventry Climb Out of the Bottom Three

Brighton & Hove Albion didn’t bother going home after their League Cup tie at the Etihad in midweek. They stayed in the Manchester area instead, and a few days later went back to the same ground and beat Manchester City 1-0 in the league.

City have now lost two league games in a row, and Arsenal made them pay at Anfield. There’s been plenty of action from the lower half of the table too, including another bad week for Manchester United. Here’s a breakdown of all the Premier League news you may have missed last week, and where I’d be using any free bets in Gameweek 10.

Ayari Gives Brighton a First Win at Manchester City

Brighton had played City away 17 times in all competitions without winning. Yasin Ayari settled the 18th on Sunday morning NZT with a close-range finish in the 11th minute, after Matheus Nunes failed to cut out a low cross from Diego Gomez.

City couldn’t find a way back. Iliman Ndiaye should have levelled before the break, but he headed Elliot Anderson’s cross wide with Bart Verbruggen beaten.

I’m starting to believe in Brighton as a top-four side. No team has more than their six league clean sheets, and they’re third on 19 points, two adrift of City.

Arsenal went three points clear at the top on Monday morning NZT. Their 1-0 win was their first in the Premier League at Anfield since September 2012, and Kai Havertz got it, tapping in Declan Rice’s cut-back at the back post on 16 minutes.

He’s now on 46 Premier League goals, and that takes him past Ilkay Gundogan as the competition’s top German scorer.

I didn’t think Arsenal were great, to be honest. Liverpool had more of the ball once they went a goal down and had a decent case for a penalty when Jurrien Timber tugged Alexander Isak’s shirt. Arsenal got away with it.

Chelsea climbed back into fourth by beating Manchester United 2-0, with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scoring in the second half.

Everton Finally Win on the Road

Before Tuesday morning, Everton hadn’t won an away league game all season. That changed at St James’ Park - a ground where they’ve now won three seasons running - with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

Thierno Barry got the goal four minutes into the second half. Lukas Hornicek saved Tyrique George’s shot and Barry was there for the rebound.

For me, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was the best player on the pitch. He created three chances, more than anyone other in the game.

Newcastle lost to Everton for the second time in four days, having already gone out of the League Cup to them. Jacob Ramsey’s two stoppage-time bookings left them with 10 men at the end, and they’ve slipped to 13th with Everton up to seventh.

I don’t think Brentford played well in their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Forest had more of the ball and more shots, but Nikola Milenkovic turned Dango Ouattara’s cross into his own net on the half-hour. Igor Thiago got the second on 76 minutes from a Jaidon Anthony pass.

It ended a four-game winless run, and Brentford have lost once in nine league matches. Even so, they won’t be near my football expert tips for a while off the back of that.

Coventry Climb Out of the Bottom Three

Coventry City went into the weekend in the relegation zone and came out of it 16th after a 3-1 home win over Sunderland.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s opener on 17 minutes was his first Premier League goal. Trai Hume’s clearance went straight to him, and he swept a first-time shot into the bottom corner. Taiwo Awoniyi made it two before half-time after winning the ball off Luke O’Nien and running into the box, and Jack Rudoni’s deflected strike early in the second half put it away.

Sunderland got a penalty back through Enzo Le Fee, then had Omar Alderete sent off late on. They’ve gone seven league games without a win and are bottom on five points. Away from home, they’ve taken one point from five trips.

Manchester United are now 17th, level with Crystal Palace on seven points and above them only on goal difference. Palace lost 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur after going down to 10 men, and Nottingham Forest are 19th on six.

I thought United were the better side for the first half at Stamford Bridge. Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside, and Amad Diallo wasted a big chance before the break.

Then it fell apart. Rogers scored five minutes into the second half. Lisandro Martinez was booked twice in quick succession, and the second one gave away the penalty Palmer scored.

United have now gone nine games without a win in all competitions, which hasn’t happened since 1988-89.

City’s trip to Forest at 6:30am NZT on Sunday is where I’d put mine. After two straight defeats, I’m expecting a reaction, but it’s worth comparing prices across the best new betting sites first.

Gameweek 10 starts with Everton against Coventry at 9am NZT on Saturday, and United host Aston Villa at 5:30am NZT on Monday.
