RB Leipzig vs Man City Prediction

RB Leipzig host Manchester City in the Champions League on Thursday morning NZT at the Red Bull Arena, with kickoff at 9am.

City have six points from three league-phase games and Leipzig have three, but I don’t think the table paints a fair picture of this one. Leipzig are a different side at home, and City have looked shaky at the back for most of the last three weeks.

City are still the right favourites for me, but I wouldn’t call this RB Leipzig vs Man City preview a simple one. My best bet mixes a result with a goals angle at around $2.50.

It’s a short enough price that I’d check the betting promotions on offer before locking it in.

RB Leipzig vs Man City Analysis

RB Leipzig

Leipzig look like two different teams depending on where they play.

At the Red Bull Arena, they’ve won all five of their games this season by a combined 19-0, including a 1-0 win over PSV in this competition. On the road, they’ve lost 6-1 at Bayern Munich and 4-1 at both Como and Real Madrid.

I don’t think their home record is a fluke. Their pressing looks sharpest in front of their own fans, and they were two goals up inside five minutes of the 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on 10 October. But Borussia Monchengladbach, who they beat 3-0 on the opening weekend, are bottom of the Bundesliga, so I wouldn’t read too much into every one of those wins.

Antonio Nusa is the player City should worry about. He has four Bundesliga goals and ranks second in the league for assists with six, and he scored again in the 2-0 win at Schalke on 31 October.

I’d love to see Nusa up against Matheus Nunes early on.

Team News: Guiu and Ouedraogo are out. Esteve and Nkunku are doubts.

Predicted Lineup: Vandevoordt; Baku, Orban, Lukeba, Raum; El Aynaoui, Banzuzi, Baumgartner; Gruda, Romulo, Nusa.

Manchester City

City arrive in Germany off the back of their worst week of the season.

Defeats to Aston Villa and Brighton have left them three points off Arsenal in the Premier League, and they needed a penalty shootout to get past Brighton in the League Cup in between. Gianluigi Donnarumma was also at fault for Nicolas Jackson’s winner at Villa Park, and he’s under real pressure for his place.

Their defence has been leaky for three weeks now. City have conceded 12 goals across their last six games, four of them in the home defeat to PSG.

But I can’t write them off because of Erling Haaland. He has four goals from two Champions League appearances this season, and he’s scored 12 times in eight career games against Leipzig, including five in the 7-0 win at the Etihad in March 2023.

Anyone hunting football betting tips on City this week should weigh up that defensive record before backing them to shut Leipzig out.

Team News: Semenyo is out.

Predicted Lineup: Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Fernandez; Foden, Cherki, Doku; Haaland.

RB Leipzig vs Man City Stats and Trends

  • City have won four of their six meetings with Leipzig.
  • Leipzig beat City 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena in December 2021.
  • Leipzig have won nine Bundesliga home games in a row.
  • City’s last visit to Leipzig ended in a 3-1 win in October 2023.
  • City have lost three of their last six matches in all competitions.

RB Leipzig vs Man City Prediction

Leipzig’s clean sheet record at home won’t survive Thursday morning, for me.

Haaland is the main reason. None of the five sides to visit Leipzig this season had anyone close to him up front. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t score.

But I can’t see City shutting Leipzig out at the other end. Nusa has been the best winger in the Bundesliga this season in my eyes, and City’s back four has looked nervous ever since that PSG game.

I’m going 2-1 to City. If they defend the way they did against Brighton, though, Leipzig could easily nick a point, and I wouldn’t talk anyone out of the draw at $4.60.

Both teams to score at $1.44 is too short for me on its own, so I’ve looked for a way to get a better price out of it.

RB Leipzig vs Man City - The Ultimate Bet

Man City to Win and Both Teams to Score @ $2.50

City at $1.57 doesn’t appeal to me, but adding a Leipzig goal takes the price out to $2.50.

Leipzig have found the net in all three of their Champions League games this season, including both 4-1 defeats. Four of the six previous meetings between these sides also produced at least four goals.

There’s a risk Leipzig’s home defence holds firm and City grind out a 1-0. I just don’t think City’s back four is in good enough nick for that right now.

I’ve seen $2.50 for this one, and it’s worth checking a few New Zealand betting sites to see if anyone goes bigger before kickoff.
