France vs Senegal Prediction

France and Senegal open World Cup 2026 Group I at MetLife Stadium on Wednesday morning New Zealand time, a repeat of the most famous opening-day shock in tournament history.

Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal when these two met in Seoul in 2002. I don’t think lightning strikes twice, but I’m not expecting a comfortable afternoon for Deschamps’ side either.

In this France vs Senegal preview, I look at form and squad depth, plus the injuries that could shape this one. I’ve got a tidy angle on the goals market at close to $2.80 for anyone keen on football tips before the group stage kicks off.

France vs Senegal Analysis

France

France are one of three or four real contenders for the trophy. Kylian Mbappe captains the side at his third World Cup, four goals short of Miroslav Klose’s all-time tournament scoring record.

Michael Olise scored a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Northern Ireland in Lille and is probably the form player in camp. But France lost 2-1 to Ivory Coast four days earlier after a flat second half. It wasn’t a panic-worthy result, but it wasn’t nothing either.

William Saliba is the big question. He aggravated a back injury during Arsenal’s Champions League final loss to PSG. Deschamps insisted he’s fine and “would have played” if needed. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t start, but at less than full fitness, Senegal’s counter-attack could test him.

Team News: Saliba is a doubt with a back injury but trained and is expected to play. Chevalier is out. Dembele returned to full training and should be available.

Predicted Lineup: Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Upamecano, T. Hernandez; Tchouameni, Rabiot; Dembele, Olise, Mbappe; Thuram.

Senegal

Senegal arrive at their third consecutive World Cup fresh off an AFCON campaign that ended in controversy. Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner against Morocco in January should have been the story, but CAF stripped them of the title after a walk-off protest. That mess is still at CAS.

Their warm-up results weren’t convincing. A 3-2 loss to the USA was followed by a 0-0 with Saudi Arabia, where Jackson got sent off. Friendly reds don’t transfer, but ending the final warm-up without scoring isn’t ideal.

Kalidou Koulibaly is the main concern. Their captain hasn’t played since early April and is just back in training. At 34, rushing him into the biggest game of the group would be a gamble.

And then there’s Sadio Mane. This is his last World Cup. He was named player of the tournament at AFCON in January after scoring the semi-final winner against Egypt. At 34, his touch and big-game instinct are still there. I wouldn’t want to be marking him on a night like this.

Team News: Koulibaly is a doubt having recently returned to training. Sarr and Jakobs are ruled out. Jackson is available despite his red card against Saudi Arabia.

Predicted Lineup: Mendy; Diatta, Koulibaly, Niakhate, Diouf; I. Gueye, P. Gueye, Camara; Ndiaye, Jackson, Mane.

France vs Senegal Stats and Trends

  • France have not lost a World Cup opener since Senegal beat them in 2002.
  • Senegal conceded just three goals across 10 World Cup qualifying fixtures.
  • Their only previous World Cup meeting was Senegal’s famous 1-0 win in the 2002 opener.
  • France have won seven of their last nine opening group stage matches at World Cups.
  • Senegal failed to score in their final pre-tournament friendly against Saudi Arabia.

France vs Senegal Prediction

I’m tipping France, but I don’t see them cruising to three or four.

Senegal’s defensive record was outstanding in qualifying, and Mane on the counter with Jackson’s pace is a scary proposition for any defence.

Olise’s form gives Deschamps a weapon Senegal will struggle to contain. But World Cup openers are nervous affairs. France went 1-0 down before winning 4-1 against Australia in 2022 - and that was a far less dangerous opponent.

I’d take France to win 1-0 or 2-0. If you’re following the group stages through the best betting apps, this is one to watch for in-play value. Senegal won’t fold early.

France to Win & Under 2.5 Goals @ $2.80

France controlled Euro 2024 without scoring from open play in any of their three group games. Deschamps doesn’t chase goals when a result will do. In a World Cup opener against a side with this much quality, I’d expect a cautious approach.

Senegal’s defence was elite in qualifying - three goals conceded in 10 matches. Koulibaly’s fitness is uncertain, but Niakhate is a capable deputy. I don’t see this game producing a heap of goals.

France win with a goal or two, Senegal compete without quite getting over the line. At $2.80 through the betting sites NZ punters have access to, it’s a price I’m happy to start the tournament with.
