Fulham vs Chelsea Prediction

A derby at Craven Cottage kicks off the Xabi Alonso era, with Chelsea travelling across west London for the opening game of the 2026-27 Premier League season on Tuesday morning New Zealand time.

Both clubs are starting over with new managers. In this Fulham vs Chelsea preview, I look at form and key absences ahead of a derby that could go either way.

I’ve got a goals-market angle at over $3.50 for those after football betting value this week.

Fulham vs Chelsea Analysis

Fulham

Alvaro Arbeloa walked through the door in early July and had six weeks to put his stamp on things. I’m not sure that’s enough.

Fulham’s pre-season produced just two wins from five games, and the 1-0 victory over Stuttgart in the final friendly was solid without being spectacular. Cesar Palacios and Gonzalo Garcia caught the eye, though.

I do like some of their business. Palacios and Garcia from Real Madrid are signings that suit a manager who knows them from the academy, and Shea Charles from Southampton adds depth in midfield. Oscar Bobb, signed permanently from City for £27m in January, is interesting too.

But Harry Wilson and Raul Jimenez are gone - Wilson alone had 10 league goals - and replacing that output will fall on Rodrigo Muniz and the newcomers.

Arbeloa has favoured a 4-2-3-1 through pre-season. Craven Cottage under the lights with a packed house for the new manager’s first competitive game - it’ll be tense.

Team News: Andersen is suspended. Cairney is injured. Robinson is fit after a scare in the Malaga friendly.

Predicted Lineup: Leno; Castagne, Bassey, Cuenca, Robinson; Charles, Pereira; Bobb, Iwobi, Garcia; Muniz.

Chelsea

Alonso arrives after winning the Bundesliga at Leverkusen in 2023-24 and two years at Real Madrid.

He’s walked into a squad that finished 10th last season under three different managers, and the summer spending has been wild. Morgan Rogers for £117m from Villa is the headline. Geovany Quenda from Sporting and Marco Palestra from Atalanta look like shrewd picks too.

Chelsea’s pre-season gave me some confidence.

Alonso has settled on a 3-4-3 - the shape he used at Leverkusen - and it looked sharp in the 3-1 win over Real Sociedad, where Rogers scored on his home debut and Joao Pedro bagged twice. I’m fascinated to see how Cole Palmer operates in that system. Alonso gave him licence to drift between the lines against Sociedad, and it clicked.

Chelsea scored 16 across six pre-season games. They also conceded 11. Defensive solidity hasn’t been their thing for a while now, and losing Fofana for this one won’t help.

Team News: Fofana serves a one-match ban carried over from his red card against Sunderland on the final day of last season. Anselmino, Emegha and Sarr are injured.

Predicted Lineup: Sanchez; Lacroix, Palestra, Colwill; Gusto, Caicedo, Lavia, Chavarria; Palmer; Rogers, Joao Pedro.

Fulham vs Chelsea Stats and Trends

  • Both teams scored in three of the last four meetings between these sides.
  • Fulham beat Chelsea 2-1 at Craven Cottage in January with Jimenez and Wilson scoring.
  • Chelsea have won 10 of their last 18 Premier League visits to Craven Cottage.
  • Fulham finished 11th last season, one place below Chelsea in 10th.
  • Chelsea collected eight red cards in the Premier League last season, double the next highest.

Fulham vs Chelsea Prediction

I expect Chelsea to begin this new era with a victory.

Alonso will have his players fired up for this, and Rogers alongside Palmer is a partnership that could cause problems for anyone in this league. Their 3-4-3 looked coherent in pre-season, and I think Chelsea have more about them going forward than Fulham do right now.

I’m not fully confident, though.

Fulham at home under the lights with a new manager wanting to prove himself in front of a full Cottage - that’s not straightforward for anyone. And Fulham have won two of the last five meetings.

A 2-1 Chelsea win feels about right. Anyone checking new betting sites ahead of the new season should focus on the goals markets here.

Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals @ $3.50

Fulham have to come out swinging. First home game under a new manager in a derby with a packed house. Chelsea’s wing-backs will push high and leave space for Fulham to counter into.

BTTS came in during three of the last four meetings at Craven Cottage, and Chelsea conceded 11 goals across six pre-season friendlies. Fulham won’t lack for pace on the break with Bobb and Robinson.

At $3.50, it’s a price I’m happy to back on the betting bonuses offered by NZ bookmakers.
