Germany vs Finland Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

Germany face Finland at MEWA Arena in Mainz on Sunday morning New Zealand time in their penultimate friendly before the 2026 World Cup, with Nagelsmann using this as a final audition before the squad flies to the United States.

In this Germany vs Finland preview, I look at form, squad selection and the key talking points heading into the weekend. I’ve also got a Germany goals angle for those scanning football expert tips ahead of kickoff.

Germany

Germany topped WCQ Group A with five wins from six, scoring 16 and conceding just three. Overall, they’re seven wins from their last 10 matches. Their March friendlies were interesting - a wild 4-3 comeback win over Switzerland where Florian Wirtz scored twice and set up two, followed by a grittier 2-1 win over Ghana where Deniz Undav grabbed an 88th-minute winner.

I’m expecting rotation here. 

Nagelsmann has 26 players to assess and only two friendlies to do it in, so the starting XI on Sunday will look different from the one that faces the USA in Chicago on June 6. Oliver Baumann starts in goal after Nagelsmann confirmed Manuel Neuer won’t feature due to a minor calf issue. Kai Havertz is also absent - he’s preparing for Arsenal’s Champions League final against PSG the day before.

This is a squad packed with attacking talent. Wirtz has been outstanding at Liverpool this season, Jamal Musiala is doing what he always does at Bayern, and the selection of 18-year-old Lennart Karl from Bayern is one of the more exciting storylines heading into the tournament.

Team News: Neuer rested (calf precaution). Havertz unavailable (Champions League final). Gnabry out (torn adductor). Karl could feature from the start.

Predicted Lineup: Baumann; Kimmich, Tah, Schlotterbeck, Raum; Stiller, Pavlovic; Leweling, Musiala, Sane; Woltemade.

Finland

Finland didn’t qualify for the World Cup and have nothing riding on this game except pride. Their WCQ campaign was a mixed bag - third in Group G, below the Netherlands and Poland, with 10 points from eight matches. 

A home defeat to Malta in November was the low point, for sure.

Jacob Friis took over from Markku Kanerva in January 2025 and has steadied things to an extent. Their FIFA Series trip to New Zealand in March produced a 2-0 win over the All Whites and a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde. Joel Pohjanpalo scored in the opener and looks like the man to inherit the centre-forward role from the retired Teemu Pukki.

I don’t see them troubling Germany much here though.

Lukas Hradecky will need a big game in goal, and the gulf in quality across every position is significant. Finland’s best hope is to play deep and nick a goal on the break.

Team News: Pohjanpalo and Hradecky expected to start. No major injuries reported.

Predicted Lineup: Hradecky; Alho, Ivanov, Tenho, Uronen; Kairinen, Walta; Keskinen, Antman, Lod; Pohjanpalo.

• Finland’s only win against Germany came in 1923.
• Germany scored six goals across their two March friendlies.
• Finland have failed to score in four of their last eight competitive matches.
• Germany have won their last seven home internationals.

I’m tipping Germany comfortably here. 

This is a World Cup squad loaded with some of the best young attacking talent in European football going up against a side that couldn’t even qualify for the tournament from a group containing Poland and the Netherlands. 

Even with rotation, the depth Nagelsmann has at his disposal is frightening.

My only slight reservation is the friendly context. Nagelsmann won’t want injuries two weeks out from the World Cup opener, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the intensity drops in the second half. 

But Germany scored four past Switzerland and two past Ghana in March when the stakes were similarly low, so there’s precedent for them treating these games as more than a gentle runout.

If you’re tracking odds through best live betting sites this weekend, the Germany goals line is where I’d focus. Finland’s defence struggled against far weaker opposition in qualifying.

Germany to Win and Over 2.5 Goals @ $3.60

Nagelsmann wants answers before naming his World Cup starters, and the best way to get them is by giving his attackers freedom. Wirtz, Musiala, Sane and Woltemade will all want to impress, and Finland’s defence isn’t equipped to contain that level of talent.

Germany scored six goals in two March friendlies. Finland conceded four against the Netherlands and three against Poland during qualifying. Even with second-half rotation, I’d expect Germany to score at least three.
