Saturday’s pre-season card gives NZ viewers two fixtures at opposite ends of the day - Bayern Munich vs Europa League champions Aston Villa at midnight in Hong Kong, and the Derby d’Italia in Perth at 11pm. I’ve gone with a three-leg multi across the two matches at $9.45.

Bayern Munich vs Aston Villa

Saturday August 8, 12:00am NZT, Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong

Bayern lost 2-1 to third-division Wehen Wiesbaden in their first pre-season friendly, and the German press weren’t kind about it. I’m not panicking on their behalf. This is the side that won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last season and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Villa are Europa League holders after thumping Freiburg 3-0 in the final, and they finished in the top four in the Prem. But their pre-season form has been patchy - a 2-4 loss to Real Sociedad and a defeat at Porto suggest they’re still getting pieces together after a long campaign.

Bayern at $2.10 on legal betting sites is where I’m starting this multi.

Juventus vs Inter Milan

Saturday August 8, 11:00pm NZT, Optus Stadium, Perth

Inter won Serie A last season and it wasn’t close. Juve finished outside the top four and missed out on Champions League football entirely - they’ll play in the Europa League next term instead.

Inter looked sharp against Man City in Hong Kong too, drawing 1-1 before winning 3-1 on penalties. Benjamin Pavard got their equaliser inside 20 minutes and the squad looked well-drilled for this stage of pre-season.

At $2.50, I’m happy to bet on football and back the Italian champions in Perth.

Juventus vs Inter Milan - Over 2.5 Goals

Saturday August 8, 11:00pm NZT, Optus Stadium, Perth

September’s Derby d’Italia produced seven goals - Juve won 4-3 with Kenan Yildiz and Khephren Thuram both on the scoresheet. I’d expect this one to be even more open. Pre-season friendlies play loose, squads get rotated from the hour mark onward, and defensive intensity is about the last thing any coach is focused on in early August.

At $1.80, three goals across 90 minutes from two deep attacking squads feels about right. You can find these odds on most NZ betting sites.
