PSG vs Arsenal Prediction

Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal collide in the Champions League final at Budapest’s Puskas Arena. The 4am Sunday morning kickoff is brutal here in New Zealand, but for those willing to lose a bit of sleep, it’s European football’s biggest dance.

PSG are the defending champions after dismantling Inter 5-0 in last year’s final. Arsenal haven’t been here since 2006. The two met at the semi-final stage last season - PSG won 3-1 on aggregate on their way to that first European crown.

In this PSG vs Arsenal preview, I look at what separates these two sides. I’ve been eyeing the goals angle for anyone checking football betting markets ahead of kickoff.

PSG vs Arsenal Analysis

PSG

I’m wary of PSG. Their Ligue 1 form since the semi-final has been patchy - a 2-2 draw with Lorient, wins over Brest and Lens, then a 2-1 loss to Paris FC. Enrique rotated through that run to rest legs for this final, so I’m not giving this too much weight.

But their Champions League knockout form is another story. Eight past Chelsea over two legs. Liverpool beaten 4-0 on aggregate. Then a bonkers 6-5 win over Bayern on aggregate, with Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doing the damage.

Kvaratskhelia has 10 goals and six assists in this Champions League campaign. Dembele (last year’s Ballon d’Or winner) has 21 across all competitions. If those two are fit and firing, PSG are as dangerous as anyone in Europe.

Fitness won’t stop being a question, though. Dembele came off after 27 minutes against Paris FC with calf discomfort. He says he’ll be fine. Achraf Hakimi is a bigger concern - out since the semi-final first leg with a thigh injury and unlikely to start.

Team News: Hakimi is a major doubt. Dembele expected fit. Pacho and Mendes have returned to training. Barcola not fully fit. Safonov starts in goal.

Predicted Lineup: Safonov; Zaire-Emery, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz; Dembele, Doue, Kvaratskhelia.

Arsenal

Arsenal have seven wins from their last eight, and more importantly, claimed the Premier League with a game to spare. They’re also now 14 Champions League games without defeat this season, conceding just six goals.

Their defensive record is historic. We’re talking nine clean sheets in 14 European matches. William Saliba and Gabriel have been immense, and David Raya won a third consecutive Premier League Golden Glove. PSG’s attack will have to be at their absolute best to break through.

Gabriel Martinelli has six Champions League goals this season. Bukayo Saka is back to his best. And Viktor Gyokeres adds a physical presence up top that Arsenal lacked in previous campaigns.

PSG knocked them out last season. I think that’ll be in the dressing room, for better or worse.

Team News: White is out with a knee injury. Timber is a major doubt. Madueke expected available after a hamstring scare on the final day. Merino and Odegaard fit.

Predicted Lineup: Raya; Mosquera, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli; Gyokeres.

PSG vs Arsenal Stats and Trends

  • Arsenal are unbeaten in 14 Champions League games this season, with nine clean sheets.
  • PSG scored 44 Champions League goals this campaign, the most of any side.
  • Previous competitive meetings between these clubs have averaged 1.7 goals per game.
  • Arsenal have conceded six Champions League goals all season.
  • The head-to-head record is level at two wins each from seven meetings.

PSG vs Arsenal Prediction

I’m going with Arsenal. Edgy pick, I know.

Here’s the thing: PSG are slight favourites and their attacking numbers deserve respect, but I’ve watched Arsenal grind through this tournament without losing a single game. That’s not luck over 14 matches.

Hakimi’s absence is significant. Warren Zaire-Emery can deputise at right-back but it changes PSG’s profile on that flank. I’m not convinced Dembele is at 100% either, whatever he’s saying. A calf problem two weeks before a final doesn’t just disappear.

Arsenal won’t try to outplay PSG. They’ll defend in a mid-block and wait for moments on the counter. Arteta will have this group drilled. I think a 1-0 win is realistic.

For those following this on NZ betting sites, I’d look at the unders and correct score markets.

PSG vs Arsenal - The Ultimate Bet

Under 2.5 Goals @ $1.90

Arsenal have allowed six goals in 14 Champions League matches. Their identity in this tournament has been clean sheets and winning ugly.

Previous meetings follow the same pattern - seven competitive fixtures averaging 1.7 goals, and last season’s semi-final finishing 3-1 on aggregate across 180 minutes.

PSG will have possession and territory, but Arsenal are comfortable without the ball. I expect Arteta to pack the midfield and deny space between the lines.

At $1.90, unders is a solid play on the best legal sports betting sites in New Zealand.
