PSG vs Villa Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

PSG and Aston Villa face off at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on Thursday morning New Zealand time in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, pitting back-to-back Champions League winners against the Europa League holders.

Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul back in May to claim their first European trophy since 1982. PSG followed up 10 days later by retaining the Champions League on penalties against Arsenal in Budapest.

In this PSG vs Aston Villa preview, I look at how both squads are shaping up for an early-season decider. I’ve got a goals angle later worth exploring for those wanting football betting tips ahead of Thursday.

PSG

Two Champions League titles in two years, five consecutive Ligue 1 crowns. And yet I don’t think PSG will be anywhere near their best here.

Their pre-season has been disrupted by the World Cup. France, Spain, Morocco and Portugal all had PSG players deep in the tournament, and most returned with barely two weeks of training. Against Mallorca on 5 August, Luis Enrique could only field eight first-teamers and lost 3-0. A 1-1 draw with Manchester United three days later was marginally better, but match fitness is a concern.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is the exception. Georgia weren’t at the World Cup, so he’s had a full pre-season and I’d expect him to be the most dangerous player on the pitch.

I wouldn’t write off a rusty PSG, though. They came from 2-0 down to beat Spurs in last year’s Super Cup and won on penalties. Luis Enrique’s group finds a way.

Team News: Several World Cup participants are fitness doubts. Dembele, Barcola, Hakimi and Ruiz all played limited minutes against Man Utd. No confirmed absentees at the time of writing.

Predicted Lineup: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes; Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Neves; Dembele, Kvaratskhelia, Doue.

Aston Villa

Villa’s squad looks different to the one that won in Istanbul. Morgan Rogers has gone to Chelsea for £117m, while Amadou Onana ruptured his ACL at the World Cup with Belgium. That’s two massive holes in the spine of the team.

Alejandro Garnacho has arrived on loan from Chelsea and should add directness, but he only managed eight goals in 43 appearances at Stamford Bridge last season. Johan Manzambi, the club-record signing from Freiburg, is already ruled out with a knee injury from the World Cup.

I’m not sure what to expect from them, if I’m honest. 

Their pre-season has been mixed - they thumped Walsall 5-0 but lost to Porto, Real Sociedad and Bayern. Joao Gomes has come in from Wolves, and Kamara’s return against Bayern was a boost. But this is a team still figuring out its identity without Rogers.

Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Buendia are where Villa’s threat will come from. Buendia was man of the match in the Europa League final, and Watkins has the movement to trouble any back line.

Team News: Onana (ACL) and Manzambi (knee) are out. Bailey is sidelined with a muscular problem. McGinn is being monitored after a knee issue. Garnacho is a doubt after a facial injury against BG Pathum United. Martinez, Konsa and Watkins face late fitness tests, with Bizot on standby.

Predicted Lineup: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Joao Gomes; Garnacho, Buendia, McGinn; Watkins.

• PSG came from 2-0 down to beat Spurs on penalties in the 2025 Super Cup.
• Villa won the Super Cup once before, beating Barcelona in 1982.
• PSG edged their Champions League quarter-final against Villa 5-4 on aggregate in April 2025.
• Both legs of that tie produced four or more goals.
• Seven of the last 10 Super Cup finals have produced three goals or fewer.

I’m going with PSG, but I’m not overly confident. 

On paper, they’ve got the better squad by some distance, and even at 70% fitness they should have enough quality to edge this.

What gives me pause is their disrupted pre-season. Villa won’t be pushovers - Emery’s record in one-off European finals is exceptional, and this group competed well against PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals 16 months ago, winning the second leg 3-2 at Villa Park.

I think PSG will have enough, but it could go to extra time or penalties. A 1-0 or 2-1 win inside 90 minutes feels most likely. If you’re checking new betting sites for this one, the goals markets are where I’d focus.

Under 2.5 Goals @ $1.90

I don’t usually back unders, but the evidence is hard to argue with. Seven of the last 10 Super Cup finals have come in under 2.5 goals. PSG’s World Cup returnees won’t be at full intensity, and Emery will set Villa up to be compact and hard to break down.

Without Rogers and Onana, Villa’s transition game is weaker. PSG will dominate possession but I don’t see them cutting Villa apart this early in the campaign.
