Tottenham vs Newcastle Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

Tottenham and Newcastle United meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday morning New Zealand time in Matchweek 2 of the Premier League, with both sides desperate for a result after underwhelming opening weekends.

Spurs were dismantled 3-0 at Brentford on the opening day despite Roberto De Zerbi spending upwards of £230 million this summer. Newcastle, under new manager Matthias Jaissle, were seconds from beating Liverpool at St James’ Park before a 99th-minute penalty stole a 2-2 draw.

In this Tottenham vs Newcastle preview, I look at both squads’ early form and the key dynamics heading into this match. I’ve also got a goals-market angle worth checking for those looking to bet on football this weekend.

Tottenham

I don’t know what to think about Spurs yet. 

Their Brentford defeat was grim - 0.57 xG across 90 minutes, zero first-half shots on target, Antonin Kinsky at fault for two of the three goals. De Zerbi called for a change in mindset afterwards, and their midweek Carabao Cup tie against Charlton was a chance to get a response.

Tottenham’s recruitment has been enormous, though. Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Mateus Fernandes - and Omar Marmoush reportedly incoming from Manchester City. That’s a lot of new faces trying to gel under a manager who’s inherited a squad that avoided relegation on the final day in each of the last two seasons.

I do think this home opener will be different. Brentford away is one of the trickier fixtures to start with, and there’s a chance the side we saw at the Gtech was a worst-case scenario.

Team News: Simons and Kulusevski are long-term knee injuries. Odobert is also out until 2027. Van de Ven, Porro, and Sarr are doubts. Kudus and Maddison were both back in training on Thursday, though neither is guaranteed to feature.

Predicted Lineup: Kinsky; Gray, van Hecke, Senesi, Robertson; Bentancur, Tonali; Fernandes, Gallagher, Tel; Solanke.

Newcastle

Newcastle should have won on the opening weekend. 

Anthony Elanga scored inside five minutes against Liverpool. Joe Willock then came off the bench to restore their lead at 2-1, and they were moments from three points before Lewis Hall’s foul on Victor Munoz gifted Szoboszlai a penalty in the ninth minute of added time.

I’m still wary, though. 

Jaissle’s squad has been gutted across two windows - Isak sold to Liverpool, Tonali now at Spurs, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon also gone. Yoane Wissa was excellent against Liverpool and Elanga looked sharp on the counter, but there’s a ceiling on what this group of very young players can do in their first Premier League appearances.

Sean Steur and Lewis Miley ran the midfield against Liverpool. Steur is 18. Miley is 20. That’s either brave or reckless - I’m not sure where I stand on it yet.

Team News: Joelinton and Burn are out. Livramento and Osula are doubts. Willock is expected to be available.

Predicted Lineup: Hornicek; Dedic, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Steur, Miley; Barnes, Wissa, Elanga; Woltemade.

• Newcastle have won five of the last seven Premier League head-to-heads.
• Spurs have lost four consecutive home league games against Newcastle.

I’m going back and forth on this one. 

Spurs should be better at home, with a full house willing De Zerbi’s rebuild into life. But I can’t overlook the head-to-head. We’re talking four straight home league defeats to Newcastle - that’s a pattern that doesn’t just change because you’ve signed half a dozen players.

If Kudus and Maddison are fit, Spurs have a different look to the side that turned up at Brentford. Without them, I’m not confident the midfield has the creativity to break Newcastle down.

I’m picking Spurs to nick it, but I’m hedging. 2-1 feels about right. I think the home crowd drags them through a tight one, though Newcastle will score - they always do in this fixture.

Both Teams to Score @ $1.65

This is the most boring pick I could’ve gone with, but the numbers are overwhelming. 

Both teams scored in eight of the last 10 league meetings. This fixture has never ended 0-0 in the Premier League era. Spurs conceded three on the opening day and Newcastle scored twice against Liverpool.

Spurs will have to attack. Newcastle counter well through Wissa and Elanga. I can’t see a clean sheet for either side at $1.65.

At that price, it’s one I’m comfortable backing through the betting bonuses available to New Zealand punters.
