Three Round of 32 ties take place on July 3 NZT and this might be the best slate of the knockout round so far.
I’ve been through the World Cup 2026 odds on all three and the value isn’t in backing heavy favourites at short prices - it’s in handicaps and goals markets. If you’re browsing football betting sites for an angle, the free bets on offer across NZ betting sites and betting apps are worth using on a day like this.
Top Picks for World Cup Day 22 | July 3
Spain vs Austria
Spain -1.5 goals ($2.20)
Spain haven’t conceded at this World Cup so far.
Three group games, zero goals against - only Mexico can say the same. Austria have let in six in three outings, including their chaotic 3-3 with Algeria in their last group game. Mikel Oyarzabal leads Spain’s scoring with two, and Lamine Yamal has been outstanding in attack.
I can’t tip Spain at $1.28 for the straight win. There’s no value in it. But -1.5 at $2.20 is a different proposition.
Austria will come forward - it’s all they know how to do - and against a side averaging 77% possession, that leaves space to exploit. Nico Williams (groin) and Yeremy Pino (shoulder) are both doubts after getting hurt in the Uruguay match, but this squad has the depth to absorb those absences.
✓ Long Shot: Austria to qualify ($7.90)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 2.5 goals ($1.91)
Portugal vs Croatia
Portugal to win ($1.85)
Croatia were finalists in 2018 and third in 2022, and Luka Modric delivered a vintage performance against Ghana at age 40. He assisted Nikola Vlasic’s winner in that match and looked comfortable at this level. Martin Baturina has been their most creative player throughout the group stage.
Portugal haven’t been convincing, though.
Outside a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, they scored once across two matches and drew 0-0 with Colombia in a game they barely threatened. Cristiano Ronaldo has played every minute of the tournament and there are real questions about his legs at 41 - he was a non-factor for the final half hour in Miami.
I’m not fully convinced by their attack, but I’m backing them anyway. They’ve conceded just once in three games and Diogo Costa has been superb in goal. Croatia’s 4-2 loss to England in the opener exposed a defence that can be cut open when pressed.
✓ Long Shot: Croatia to qualify ($3.30)
✓ Extra Tip: BTTS Yes ($1.95)
Switzerland vs Algeria
Switzerland to win ($1.90)
Switzerland went through Group B unbeaten, scoring seven and conceding three. Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler anchor that midfield, and Murat Yakin’s side have been one of the more reliable outfits at this tournament.
Algeria are here as the sixth-best third-placed team. They lost 3-0 to Argentina in the opener before recovering to edge Jordan 2-1 and then grabbing a last-gasp 3-3 with Austria. Riyad Mahrez’s brace in that match was a reminder of what he can produce, but seven goals conceded in three group games is a red flag.
I like Switzerland’s structure against a defence this porous.
✓ Long Shot: Algeria to qualify ($2.86)
✓ Extra Tip: Over 2.5 goals ($2.00)
