The final three Round of 32 ties fall on July 4 NZT, and I’ve put together a three-leg multi paying $9.36 across the card.

Argentina’s clash with Cape Verde is the most lopsided fixture in the entire knockout draw, so I’ve gone with a handicap on that one to bump up the price. Egypt and Colombia are the other two legs - both favoured but with enough question marks to give us decent odds.

If you’re checking the World Cup 2026 odds on football betting sites before work this morning, there’s value here. A few free bets doing the rounds on NZ betting sites and betting apps too, so no harm having a go risk-free.

Top Picks for World Cup Day 23 | July 4

Australia vs Egypt

Egypt to win ($2.50)

Egypt came through Group G on five points, starting with a 1-1 draw against Belgium before beating New Zealand 3-1 for their first World Cup win in 92 years. A 1-1 draw with Iran closed the group.

Australia got out of Group D on four points, but they beat Turkey 2-0 on the opening day and couldn’t do much after that. A 2-0 loss to the USA and a goalless draw with Paraguay left them with two goals from three games.

Mohamed Salah’s hamstring is the big question mark. He came off against Iran at the 57th minute and scans confirmed a strain, but Egypt’s coaching staff are optimistic he’ll be available. I’m expecting him to play. Even if he doesn’t, Omar Marmoush gives Egypt a credible focal point up front, and Australia’s attack has been pretty toothless throughout.

I’m backing Egypt at $2.50 - a slight leap of faith on Salah’s fitness, but this is the stronger side either way.

✓ Long Shot: Australia to win ($3.30)
✓ Extra Tip: Mohamed Salah anytime scorer ($3.40)

Argentina vs Cape Verde

Argentina -2.5 goals ($2.40)

Argentina to win is $1.15. Nobody’s putting that in a multi. Argentina -2.5 goals at $2.40 is where the value is.

Messi scored six goals in the group stage - a hat-trick against Algeria to equal Miroslav Klose’s all-time record, then a brace against Austria to break it. He came off the bench against Jordan and still found the net with a free kick. Nineteen career World Cup goals now. Argentina won all three group games, scoring eight and conceding just once.

Cape Verde drew all three of their group games, including a 0-0 with Spain where goalkeeper Vozinha pulled off seven saves. A wild 2-2 with Uruguay added to the fairy tale. But two goals scored in the entire tournament from a side ranked 67th in the world - I don’t see them holding Argentina at arm’s length for long.

I’m tipping a comfortable win by three or more.

✓ Long Shot: Cape Verde to qualify ($15.20)
✓ Extra Tip: Lionel Messi anytime scorer ($1.59)

Colombia vs Ghana

Colombia to win ($1.56)

Colombia topped Group K with seven points, conceding just once across three games. Daniel Munoz scored in both of their wins - a 3-1 over Uzbekistan and a 1-0 over DR Congo - and they held Portugal to a goalless draw on the final day. Close to 60% average possession and 59 total attempts on goal across the group.

Ghana got through as one of the best third-placed sides. They beat Panama 1-0 with a 95th-minute winner from Caleb Yirenkyi, then held England to a goalless draw before falling 1-2 to Croatia. Two goals in three games, and one was in the 95th minute. Carlos Queiroz has them defending deep and looking to counter, which will test Colombia’s patience.

But Colombia ground out a near-identical result against DR Congo - controlled the ball and eventually got the 1-0. I think they do the same in Kansas City.

✓ Long Shot: Ghana to qualify ($4.50)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 2.5 goals ($1.65)
