The knockout rounds open with a single fixture on Sunday morning, and I’ve been looking forward to this one. Canada and South Africa are about to contest the first Round of 32 match in World Cup history, and neither side has ever played a knockout game at this tournament.
I’m backing Canada, but this won’t be straightforward.
With just one game on the slate I’ve gone with a same game multi instead of the usual three-match parlay, and there’s solid reasoning tying the three legs together. World Cup 2026 odds across NZ betting sites have Canada as clear favourites at $1.71.
Top Picks for World Cup Day 18 | June 29
Canada vs South Africa
Canada to win ($1.71)
I think Canada get this done in normal time. Jonathan David has three goals at this tournament - all from that 6-0 demolition of Qatar - and Cyle Larin has two of his own. That front pairing should cause problems for a South African side that scored just twice across the group stage.
Still, South Africa deserve credit for getting here. Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute winner against South Korea was one of the best results of the group stage, and Ronwen Williams has been sharp in goal.
But I’m not convinced they have the firepower to trouble Canada’s back line. If you’ve got free bets for the knockout rounds, the Under 2.5 line at $1.91 is one to consider given that none of South Africa’s group games went over that total.
Canada’s midfield is where it gets murky. Ismael Kone broke his leg against Qatar and is gone for the tournament. Alphonso Davies hasn’t started a game yet after his hamstring problems, though he’s been available off the bench since the Qatar match. If Davies starts here, I’d feel even more confident.
Even without him from the first whistle, Canada at $1.71 on football betting sites and betting apps is about right for a side that’s scored eight goals in three games.
✓ Long Shot: South Africa to qualify ($3.80)
✓ Extra Tip: Both teams to score - No ($1.70)
