USA
It has been a bumpy road, but the Americans find themselves in yet another Gold Cup final - their third in the last four editions - with a shot at an eighth title. Legal betting sites, however, are not favouring them as the runaway favourites.
Winning this match will be a landmark moment for US Soccer, perhaps even more so for Mauricio Pochettino. This will be his first international trophy and a powerful rebuttal to the criticism that surrounded him after his team’s four-game losing streak before the Gold Cup.
Team News: Pochettino went for an unchanged XI against Honduras in the semi-finals. He will likely do so again since there are no new injuries or suspensions.
Predicted Lineup: Freese; Freeman, Richards, Ream, Arfsten; Adams, de la Torre; Berhalter, Tillman, Luna; Agyemang.
Mexico
Betting apps had pinned them down as favourites, but Mexico did not have it easy against Honduras. Los Catrachos gave the defending champions a run for their money, but Mexico’s defensive excellence put them through.
Javier Aguirre has done it all before, of course. The Mexico manager is currently on his third stint as the El Tri boss, and he led them to Gold Cup glory in 2009.
Mexico have been rock solid at the back. They have not conceded a goal since their five-goal opening match thriller win against the Dominican Republic. It’s this defensive resilience that could give them the edge against the hosts in the final.
Team News: Cesar Montes and Mateo Chavez can expect to keep their places in the first XI. Aguirre brought them in to replace Jesus Gallardo and Erik Lira in the semi-finals.
Predicted Lineup: Malagon; Araujo, Montes, Vasquez, Gallardo; Rodriguez, Ed. Alvarez, L. Chavez; Alvarado, Jimenez, Vega.
