The 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway on Friday morning NZT with both Group A openers on the card. Mexico host South Africa at the Azteca before South Korea face Czechia in Guadalajara seven hours later.

I’ve been looking at the World Cup 2026 odds across NZ betting sites and there’s value in both fixtures. If you’ve got free bets to use, this is a decent place to start.

Top Picks for World Cup Day 1 | June 12

Mexico vs South Africa

Mexico to Win ($1.45)

I can’t see past Mexico here. They’re unbeaten in eight matches in 2026 and won all three pre-tournament warm-ups, finishing with a 5-1 thumping of Serbia at altitude.

South Africa are winless in five heading into this. They lost to Cameroon in the AFCON round of 16 and couldn’t beat Nicaragua or Jamaica in their warm-up friendlies. Factor in 2,250 metres of altitude at the Azteca and I don’t see where Bafana Bafana’s upset comes from.

Raul Jimenez scored against Serbia and has been in good nick all year. Santiago Gimenez is the other option through the middle. There’s a question mark in goal - Luis Malagon is out injured, and it’s not confirmed whether Guillermo Ochoa or Luis Angel Rangel will start. Rangel has been the first choice in 2026, but Ochoa’s six World Cups of experience could sway the call for the opener.

Either way, I don’t think it changes the result.

✓ Long Shot: Mexico to win to nil ($2.20)
✓ Extra Tip: Under 2.5 goals ($1.77)

South Korea vs Czechia

South Korea to Win ($2.60)

Son Heung-min is the reason I’m backing South Korea. He scored 10 in qualifying and they went through the entire Asian campaign unbeaten - 40 goals scored, eight conceded. You don’t post numbers like that by accident.

I’ll be upfront - the 4-0 loss to Ivory Coast in a warm-up gives me pause. That was a full-strength side too, with Kim Min-jae and Son both starting. But a World Cup opener is nothing like a mid-week friendly, and I’d expect South Korea to be far more disciplined here.

Czechia qualified through two playoff penalty shootouts - against Ireland in the semi-final and Denmark in the final - so they’re not short on nerve. Patrik Schick will be a handful from set pieces. But all of Czechia’s best recent form came at home against weaker opposition, and I’m not sure that’ll translate to Guadalajara at 1,566 metres.

✓ Long Shot: Son Heung-min anytime scorer ($2.50)
✓ Extra Tip: Both Teams to Score ($1.90)
