Ipswich Town vs Arsenal Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

Ipswich Town and Arsenal meet at Portman Road on Wednesday morning New Zealand time in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Arsenal have been faultless across six matches this season, but Arteta will rotate after a packed opening schedule spanning the Premier League and Champions League. Ipswich are coming off a gutsy 3-2 win at Crystal Palace and will fancy a crack at a reshuffled side. 

In this Ipswich Town vs Arsenal preview, I look at both squads and the likely rotation picture. I’ve got an angle on the goals market at over $3.40 for anyone keen on football betting tips this week.

Ipswich Town

I’m surprised by how well Ipswich have settled on their return to the Premier League. Two wins from four isn’t bad for a newly promoted side, and that Crystal Palace result - falling a goal down early before fighting back for Zian Flemming’s late winner - was exactly the sort of performance that creates confidence.

Emersonn has caught the eye up front since arriving from Toulouse. Jack Clarke and Julio Enciso are providing the creative spark, and Leif Davis continues to be a threat from left-back. Gary O’Neil will need to weigh up how much to rotate with Everton away on Saturday, but the chance to progress against a weakened Arsenal side doesn’t come around often.

I wouldn’t read too much into the 5-2 result at Old Trafford or the Liverpool defeat at Portman Road. Both results were expected for a promoted side finding its feet. How they responded is the important bit, and winning away at Selhurst Park was exactly the answer they will have been looking for.

Team News: Philogene, Matusiwa, Florentino and Taylor are all out injured.

Predicted Lineup: Walton; Tuanzebe, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Lukic, Cajuste; Fatawu, Enciso, Clarke; Emersonn.

Arsenal

Arsenal are six wins from six. There’s no arguing with these numbers - 12 scored and one conceded across all competitions, including that composed 1-0 win at Napoli in the Champions League through an Odegaard screamer.

But this is the cup, and Arteta will change things. Brighton away comes on Saturday and Lille visit in the Champions League a week later. Expect Kepa in goal, Konsa and Hincapie in defence, and the likes of Eze, Nwaneri and Gyokeres pushing for starts.

I’m interested to see what Gyokeres does with minutes. He hasn’t started a league game yet and will be desperate to get going. Even this rotated XI would cost north of 200 million. Cup football is a different game when you’re Arsenal.

Team News: Saliba is out long-term with a back problem. White is a major doubt after coming off at half time against Sunderland with a groin complaint. Mosquera faces a late fitness test on a hamstring issue.

Predicted Lineup: Kepa; Timber, Konsa, Hincapie, Lewis-Skelly; Merino, Guimaraes; Nwaneri, Eze, Tzolis; Gyokeres.

• Ipswich beat Leicester 3-1 in the second round.
• Arsenal have won all six competitive matches this season, conceding once.
• Ipswich haven’t scored against Arsenal in their last three meetings.
• Arsenal won 4-0 at Portman Road in April 2025, the last fixture between these two.

I’m picking Arsenal, but a whole host of changes should make it a bit of a scratchy victory. Arteta’s rotated cups sides have been inconsistent - Brighton knocked them out at this stage four seasons ago - and Ipswich at Portman Road off the back of that Palace win will be up for it. 

That said, losing the final to City last season stung, so I’d be surprised if Arteta treats this as a throwaway.

What gives me some pause is Gyokeres. He hasn’t found his rhythm yet, and cup ties against motivated opponents aren’t always where you rediscover your sharpness. If Eze and Nwaneri click alongside him, the talent gap should win out eventually.

I can see this being open. Ipswich will have a go - they’ve got nothing to lose. Arsenal’s second string is deep enough to win it, but probably not deep enough to shut the door. For those tracking this on sports betting apps, the goals markets are where I’d be looking.

Arsenal Win and Both Teams to Score @ $3.40

Arsenal have the squad to win this, even with wholesale changes. Gyokeres, Eze and Nwaneri represent a level of rotation most clubs would dream of, and I expect Arteta to take this competition seriously after last season’s final heartbreak against City.

Ipswich have scored in four of five matches this season. Emersonn and Clarke have been lively, and a reshuffled Arsenal defence missing Saliba - and potentially White - will be there to be tested. I’m happy to back Arsenal progressing while Ipswich find the net along the way.
